GUEST SPEAKER : Our Speakers tonight were from the Canadian Cancer Society; Volunteer Coordinator Sharon Hudson and Fundraiser, fellow Rotarian Helen Walsh. Their purpose is to increase awareness re the mandate of the Canadian Cancer Society. This National organization has been in existence for 77 yrs, with a mission to enhance the quality of life and raise awareness of for patients and their families. They provide information about the now 210 different types of cancer, support transport to treatment for patients, a Smokers Help Line, advocate for Public Policy ie, coverage for drugs, funding research. Most of this awareness and support in Durham region is provided by some 2000 volunteers. There are only four (4) paid staff. More information is available on www.cancer.ca Helen noted that the fundraising is focused on research as 80% of the funds needed are supported by events such as Relay for Life.

Past President Hilda Finnigan thanked the speakers for sharing this information noting that many if not all of us have been touched by this disease which seems to find an increasing number of ways to attack.

.

Fom Past President/President Elect Dave Andrews Quote for tonight “WE REMEMBER”

Meeting Ajourned.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
