ROTARY MOMENT

WORLD POLIO DAY IS OCTOBER 24, 2015 - WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR AREA?

As you all know, October 24 is World Polio Day when Rotarians around the world focus on telling the world that we are this close to eradicating polio from the world. So what’s happening?

Just as an example, On Oct 5, at Oshawa media debate of candidates for the federal riding of Oshawa, at the Oshawa Golf Club. The debate’s moderator was none other than Terry Johnson. We raised $120 from guests at the debate. That will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Canadian Government so that $600 will go to the End Polio Now campaign to rid the world of this terrible disease.

Here are some more events, happening this week and next:

Terry Johnson of Radio Station CKDO will be interviewing District Governor Michael Bell and Dr. Bob Scott in two separate interviews. Bob Scott, as most of you know, is Rotary’s immediate past chair of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The interviews will be broadcast later in the week as World Polio Day approaches.

Mayor John Henry will present proclamations to the Presidents of the two Rotary Clubs in Oshawa (Geoff Lloyd of Oshawa and our very own Mike McLaren of Oshawa-Parkwood) at noon hour meeting of the Rotary Club of Oshawa on October 19 at the Oshawa Golf Club.

Roger Anderson, Durham Region chairman, will be presenting a proclamation to the 10 Rotary Club Presidents in Durham Region on Tuesday October 20 at the Oshawa Golf Club at the regular evening meeting of our Rotary Club with District Governor Michael Bell in attendance to accept the proclamation. And the 10 Rotary Club Presidents and Assistant Governors and Michael Bell will be here for dinner with us.

These same type of events are happening in Richmond Hill and other towns and Cities throughout Southern Ontario and around the world.

During the week of Oct 19, hundreds of Rotarians from Rotary Clubs all along the GO Train routes will be at GO Train stations very early in the morning handing out our End Polio Now brochures to tell the public about World Polio Day and how the public can support this final push to end Polio.

In many communities, an End Polio Now Flag will be flying high over City and Town Halls.

And in Toronto, at the Rotary District 7070 Conference at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel, on October 24, Rotarians from the 55 Rotary Clubs in southern Ontario will be on hand to unfurl an End Polio Now Sail in downtown Toronto.

How close are we to a polio-free world? What’s needed to finish the job? Can we make history together?

Join Rotary on October 23, 2015 for the third annual World Polio Day event. We’ll be streaming live from New York City, so tune in at 6:30 p.m. EasternTime to watch a global status update on the fight to end polio and take part in the conversation. Guests will include Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity ambassadors, polio survivors and others. Watch at www.endpolio.org

As World Polio Day draws closer, the world is 99.9% polio free, the fight to end polio in not over and Rotary Clubs world-wide, just like ours, here in Oshawa, continue to raise funds to meet the challenge.

The message to world leaders is clear: support the final push to achieve eradication now while the goal has never been closer, or face the potential consequence of a new polio pandemic that could disable millions of children within a decade.

It is so important to generate the funds needed to End Polio Now. To fail is to invite a polio resurgence that would condemn millions of children to lifelong paralysis in the years ahead. The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk”.

GUEST SPEAKER :

Name of Speaker: Peter Ginsberg – President of the Rotary Club of Newmarket

Introducer: Janice Coupland

Thanked By: Past President Kris Sachdeva

Peter’s Remarks:

Daughters for Life was founded by Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish through a great personal tragedy.

From their website:

On January 2009, an Israeli tank shelled the home of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish in the Gaza Strip killing three of his daughters, Bessan, 21, Mayar, 15, and Aya, 13. That heartbreaking tragedy came minutes before Dr. Abuelaish spoke live on an Israeli TV program. His anguished cries for help captured hearts and headlines in Israel and around the world. It was Abuelaish’s response to the loss of his daughters that won him humanitarian awards around the world. Instead of seeking revenge or sinking into despair and hatred, Dr. Abuelaish has called for the people of the Middle East to stop the bloodshed and start talking to each other. His deepest hope is that his daughters will be the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

The Daughters for Life Foundation was established in memory of Bessan, Mayar and Aya and seeks to honour their love of life and learning and their hopes and dreams for an educated future.

The Daughters for Life Foundation believes that lasting peace in the Middle East depends on empowering girls and young women through education to develop strong voices for the betterment of life throughout the Middle East. To that end, we provide scholarships and awards for aspiring young women that enable them to pursue studies otherwise inaccessible to them. Awards are offered to students in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, as well as scholarships at the graduate and undergraduate level to study in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Our awards and scholarships are offered to young women of any Middle Eastern nationality or background, whether Arab or Israeli, and regardless of religious affiliation, whether Muslim, Jewish, or Christian. Our recipients are chosen not only for their academic achievements, often in the face of socio-economic adversity and hardship, but also for their character and commitment to improving the lives of girls and young women in the Middle East. Our goal is to invest in their potential for leadership and foster their success in whatever fields they choose to pursue.

MISSION: To invest in the education of girls and young women living in the Middle East

VISION: To create a peaceful world through the power of EDUCATION

 WE BELIEVE: Empowering girls and young women through education,is the key to long lasting peace in the Middle East and the rest of the world..  Quality Education is a human right for every girl in Middle East, regardless their ethnicity or religious affiliation.

Daughters for life provides post secondary education opportunities to young women from the middle east. Through a program of scholarships and awards of merit young ladies from the middle east study abroad at colleges and universities. In 2015 30 young ladies were involved in the program. To date 5 have graduated with 3 who chose not to continue in their studies. ( 3 scholars are studying in Canada )

Daughters for Life has been able to bridge the divide between Palestine, Lebannon and Israel, due to Dr. Abuelaish’s personal connection to the middle east.

The Rotary Club of Newmarket is looking to advance a program in support of the Daughters for Life and they are asking for our help and commitment.

The ask is small, we are asked to donate to this initiative at an amount of $2000.00 (lesser values would be accepted). The Rotary Club of Newmarket is persuing a District Matching Grant which would see donations increased substantially.

Be sure to visit Daughters For Life for more information about this organization and learn more about Dr Abuelaish..

NEXT WEEK:

Linda Porritt will be doing her Craft Talk and Roger Anderson, Chair of Durham Region will be here to issue the Proclamation that Ocotber 24 will be World Polio Day in Durham Region. He will be handing the Proclamation to District Governor Michael Bell and the 10 Rotary Club Presidents of Durham Region.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
