ROTARY MOMENT :  Past President David Andrews chose the topic of Attendance Requirements for tonights’ Rotary Moment.  Attending meetings fosters fellowship, provides opportunity to meet new people, and keeps us current on Rotary activities locally and internationally. There are requirements according to the Constitution and Bylaws – attend or make up at least 50% of club meetings in each half of the year; should not miss or fail to make up four consecutive meetings.  Making up is easy – attend a meeting at any Rotary Club, world wide, attend an Interact or Rotoract meeting or event, attend certain District or RI meetings; participate in club sponsored events or service projects.

GUEST SPEAKER  :  Past Disrict Governor and fellow Oshawa Parkwood Rotarian Ted Morrison was introduced by Past President Andy Lyons.

     Ted spoke to us about the Rotary International Foundation Benefactor Program.  These donations are made to the Permanent Fund which supports the Administration costs of Rotary International.  This fund operates using only the “interest” and the principle remains untouched.  Currently, there is $720 Million in principle and the goal is to have $one Billon by 2025, at which time this fund will be self sustaining.  This is an Endowment fund proposed to support “Rotary in the Future”.  To be a benefactor you may make a donation outright or add a codicil to your will.  Ted passed out cards to be filled out for this latter and encouraged us to think about it.  We have seventeen benefactors already among club members and a goal to add more names to the list. The benefactor program is run on the honour system. Ted assured us that should circumstances change after we have made a commitment to be a benefactor there will be NO repercussions. You can complete the cards and return them to Ted at a subsequent meeting.

Pres Jodi thanked Ted for giving this information which many members indicated they had not clearly understood.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
