ROTARY MOMENT none this meeting
GUEST SPEAKER : MP Colin Carrie was introduced by Devon Biddle noting that he has been our representative for ten years and has also served as Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment. Devon also noted that Shane Kelly has been with MP Colin for much of that time.
MP Carrie opened by recognizing the work of Rotary both locally and internationally and thanked David Andrews for inviting him to speak to us once again.
He spoke of a federal mandate to strengthen and grow Canada’s’ economy noting
- we are in the best financial position in the G7,
- we must return to balanced budgets and keep interest rates low
- European Union access is very important to Canadas’ position in the financial world
He spoke, also, of several bills currently being read. These include – Bill C40 for protection and preservation of the environment – to create Rouge National Urban Park (will be larger than Central Park in New York City); legislation to protect Canadian families from unsafe medical products (addressing public safety and addiction prevention); Bill C1 –controls for social media, on line crime such as cyberbullying; C36 – controls on prostitution and exploitation; Victims Bill of Rights and several others. There is much discussion in the House regarding these and other issues and resolution will take some time.
MP Carrie also told us that he had been in attendance at a meeting with Oshawas’ Ukrainian community regarding the current state of unrest in Ukraine. James Bezin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defense and MP Erin O”Toole were also in attendance at the meeting. The purpose was to reassure Ukrainian Canadians that the Federal Government is monitoring the situation in Ukraine.
Kim Boatman thanked MP Colin for sharing this important information with us. There were several questions from the members present.
Meeting Adjourned
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
