GUEST SPEAKER  :

  Our Speaker this evening, District Governor Valerie Wafer was introduced by Assistant Governor Wayne Routly.  Valerie, a member of the Rotary Club of Whitby, spoke enthusiastically about RI President Ron Burton’s logo for 2012/14 “ENGAGE ROTARY;CHANGE LIVES”.  She asked “What is the meaning of engagement?”, then went on to say it is time taken to get to know members, especially new members and make them feel welcome.  In doing this we will also help them and ourselves to recognize the value of helping others. Engagement is infectious and a necessary part of surviving in this world of change.  In order to “engage” young professionals, today we must accept and utilize the world of technology and social media and make this work for Rotary.  As we do this the full impact of being a Rotarian will be recognized.

     Valerie then asked Past President Marion Mills to spend a Rotary Moment telling us “why” she joined and stayed engaged in Rotary.  Marion spoke about feeling that it was a compliment to be asked to join, how she felt a warm welcome and sense of family, was impressed with the work done by Rotarians both locally and world wide.  The sense of fellowship that is so much a part of our meetings and our work efforts.Of course, her trip to Barcelona and attending the International Conference, only enhanced her good feelings about Rotary and the work accomplished.  Marion also spoke about how her grandson Mateos has become so much a part of our activities, making “life long” friends with Robert Kipling and Andy Lyons.  And, of course, Marion in her wisdom, recognized that Hilda would appreciate the support of another female club member!!.

     Thanking Marion, Valerie noted that in the words of Paul Harris, “this is a changing world and we must be prepared to change with it”, “from what we are today, to what will work for tomorrow”.

President Al Finnigan thanked DG Valerie for her message, noting that we all should move forward to meet this challenge together to ensure the work of Rotary continues

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
