ROTARY MOMENT :  None tonight.

GUEST SPEAKER  :  Constable Astrid Morse, Durham Regional Police Service – on site Kids Safety Village coordinator

KIDS SAFETY VILLAGE ANNUAL UPDATE: Constable Astrid Morse updated the two clubs on the activities of the last year at the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region and the excellent safety programs for the more than 15,000 school children in grades 1, 3 and 5 of Durham Region, that attend on an annual basis. She will be creating and distributing newsletters in the spring and fall to the elementary schools in Durham Region  to gain even more interest and participation. She is looking at a fundraising contest among the various school classes as we ramp up the Kids Safety Village Revitalization and Expansion Project.

Last year, there were 5 annual special events : The Halloween Haunt, Christmas at The Village, Safety Day for OPG, the Easter Eggstravaganza and the Bicycle Fun & Safety Day (at which all kids received new helmets). The Christmas Committee is planning to light up the Village this year with Blitz Lighting, and movie stations and lots of Christmas music throughout the Village. Many corporations have assisted her with the events: CN, Home Depot and Canadian Tire North (both in Whitby). Volunteers from Home Depot plan to assist with painting some of the buildings at the Village. A police Appreciation Dinner held last year raised funds and 15 helmets and 15 “fat” wheels (for bicycle stabilization) were donated to the Village. The “fat” wheels will allow handicapped children the opportunity to ride the bicycles.

THE KIDS SAFETY VILLAGE REVITALIZATION & EXPANSION PROJECT: The Kids Safety Village Revitalization and Expansion Project is well under way. The Fire Departments in Durham Region have agreed to set up fire safety for the children attending the Village when the project is completed. The Durham Insurance Association are reviewing their increased involvement in the Village and the Whitby Lions Club is also interested in more “hands-on” assistance for Village projects.

Our own Rotarian Past President Lennis Trotter spoke about the Kids Safety Village Revitalization and Expansion Project. There is a new red brochure available to organizations to review. The fundraising started in the spring of 2014. And the lease with the School Board has to be renewed for another 20 years in September 2015. Various groups have been asked for major donations and Lennis encouraged anyone in the 2 clubs to bring forth names and contact information of corporations to the Committee, that they think may be interested in buildings and major donations to the Kids Safety Village Revitalization and Expansion Project. Money is required now, to get the buildings revitalized and the new building started.

Past District Governor of Rotary District 7070, here in southern Ontario Ted Morrison has been visiting the Rotary Clubs in Durham Region, soliciting their support. Ted noted that he has been well received and that many individual Rotarians in Durham Region have indicated that their own businesses may also assist.

On September 25, 2014, there will be an Open House to attract corporate sponsors to see the Village first hand and encourage them for donations. Soon, there will be social media exposure through Facebook, Twitter, etc. There is a “Donate Now” button on the website www.durhamsafetyvillage.com  .  Everyone is encouraged to tell their friends, via whatever means, electronic or face-to-face, to make donations today to the Kids Safety Village.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
