Introducer: Past President Lennis Trotter

Thanked By: Past President Larry Hurren

Speaker’s Remarks: Ontario Collaborative Law Federation – A different Way to Divorce.

The three speakers, experts in their respective fields defined collaborative practice as a way to resolve disputes respectfully without going to court. In a separation or divorce, Collaborative Practice requires your commitment to mutual respect, open communication, information sharing and a mutually acceptable settlement. You and your spouse or partner work with your own lawyers and other trained professionals. They provide support and guidance as you work together on a solution that everyone can live with.

No single approach is right for everyone. Many couples who want a process that gives them control over the outcome, choose Collaborative practice or Collaborative Law.

Collaborative Practice works for couples who agree to behave ethically, listen objectively, disagree respectfully, make kids a priority, plan with the future in mind, work creatively and cooperatively, and keep their process out of the courts.

The Collaborative Team includes a lawyer who provides legal information for crafting an agreement, a financial consultant who helps develop viable financial options, a child specialist who addresses the needs of the children, and a family professional who helps with communications and emotions in a time of transition.

To help you with the many challenges in the dispute resolution process, Collaborative Practice provides specially trained lawyers and offers a team of other specialists to support you with financial issues, concerns about children, and emotional turmoil. The Collaborative Team lends advice, expertise and support at a time when you most need it.

The Collaborative Practice Durham Region is one of 17 groups of specially trained professionals across the Province that make up the Ontario Collaborative Law Federation.

They also cited many facts: 43% of married couples in Ontario will be divorced before their 30th anniversary. In common law situations, over 50% of common law arrangements are over in the first 5 years. The rate of divorce is increasing exponentially for those over 50 years of age. The average court case takes over 2 years. Collaborative practice is completed in less than 6 months.

Collaborative Law was started in Minnesota over 20 years ago.

The three speakers want to talk to Rotary Clubs because we are leaders in our community, that practice high ethical standards, and service to others. They ask us to help people choose “the alternative” to the court system. The Durham Region Collaborative law website is filled with over 40 professionals.

They encourage everyone to go to the website: www.durhamcollaborative.com and see fist hand, the better way. Collaborative Law is giving a couple the best human, legal, and financial conditions for their lives going forward.

Prenuptual agreement can also be created by the Collaborative Law group.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
