ANNOUNCEMENTS Hilda Finnigan put forward the suggestion that for our Social Night on May 27th we might like to attend the IL DIVO Concert at the GM Centre. She suggested that members interested might need to purchase their own tickets. Suggestions were also put forward that inquiry could be made re the availability of box seating. Hilda will investigate further. A show of hand indicated that several members are interested in this event. Hilda also suggested that we might have dinner here as usual perhaps changing the time to 6PM to allow us to get to the concert for 8PM.
More info to follow.

ROTARY MOMENT none this week
GUEST SPEAKER : Our guest speaker for this week was Mayor John Henry who was introduced by Past President David Andrews as “someone who cares about Oshawa”.
Mayor Henry began by telling us that he “is proud to be a Rotarian, one of a group who do amazing things locally and around the world”.
He went on to speak about how the City of Oshawa has evolved since the 1960’s when the main, almost only, industry was General Motors, to today when we can boast of an evolving with UOIT, Durham College, Queen’s University Medial Programs at our hospital, TRIOS College, the Trent Campus ARTS Program and much more. There is a lot of diversity in our City, many International students come here to study, there is much construction ongoing and in the planning stages. Mayor Henry is proud of the fact that Durham Region Mayors have fostered a strong relationship, working together and supporting each other so that each of our communities is able to enjoy the benefits.
Several questions were asked and answered.
Past President Lennis Trotter thanked Mayor Henry for the update re Oshawa and around the Region.
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
