ROTARY MOMENT   : District 7070 Membership Initiative: 100 Members – 100 Days

 Dave Andrews updated us on membership initiative.

100 members in 100 Days - Contest for ALL District 7070 Rotary Clubs
From Past District Governor Mike Phelan and the District 7070 Membership Committee:
Celebrate the centennial of Rotary in District 7070! (The Rotary Club of Toronto is 100 Years Old This Year). Our goal is to add 100 net new members to the clubs in our district in 100 days – an average of net +2 per club.

A draw will take place on...December 24, 2012 with prizes awarded for your club projects.
First prize $2500
Second prize $1000
Third prize $500
To be eligible for the draw, a club must show a net increase of at least 2 members.

A club with a net + 2 members will reeive ONE Ballot in the draw listed above. ONE additional ballot will be awarded for EACH new net member.

Club Membership Initiative: Dave then asked our own Rotary Club members members to participate in a Coffee& Dessert Rotary Information Night on Nov 20 for prospective members. This initiative, under the leadership of Membership Director Robbie Larocque is identical to the Membership Initiative we did about 8 years ago under Past District Governor Ted Morrison.

Our Club members are asked to think of a prospective member or two or three, and submit their names on a proposed member information sheet to the Membership Committee. The Committee would send a letter of invitation to the prospective member and invite them to the Coffee& Dessert Rotary Information Night. The Membership Committee would inform the prospective members about our Rotary Club and the benefits of joining Rotary. If the proposed member agrees, the formal membership proposal form is filled out by the current member and the formal process of membership proposal begins. Last time we did this, we added 10 new Rotarians to our Rotary Club.

GUEST SPEAKER  :Name of Speaker: Dave Andrews, Director of Public Relations
Topic: Public Relations Committee – Update to the Club Members
Remarks:Update to the Club on the Activities of the Public Relations  Committee 2012 - 2013

Public relations informs communities around the world that Rotary is a credible organization that meets real needs. It is the responsibility of every Rotarian to spread the good word about Rotary and our Rotary Club.When a Rotary club has a positive public image, current membersare motivated to be active and prospective members are eager to join.

The public relations committee has worked with the following club committees to meet public relations goals:
Fundraising committees – Class Act, Skate-a-thon, Ribfest, Cakes and Hams, Reverse Draw,  just to name a few
All Service committees (to be aware of upcoming projects that would be of interest to the media

    • i.e. Mary Street School items
    • Remembrance Day ad in Snap Oshawa
    • Remembrance Day Wreath Ceremony
    • Festival of Remembrance Concert  - Ad in the program

 Membership committee (to tailor our efforts to target potential members in the
Community – i.e. Chamber of Commerce Newsletter every 2 months and Special Chamber of Commerce meetings and Events)
• Rotary Foundation committee (to be aware of upcoming Humanitarian Grants projects, World Polio Day, or visiting scholarship recipients)
• Club administration committee (to notify the media in advance of who is on the weekly club program and to design the club’s Web site to appeal to the media and general public)
New Generations Committee – to help promote Youth Exchange, Interact, Rotaract and Earlyact clubs and activities in our community

 The District  has spent a lot of money in January – February  2012 and will do even more in January – February 2012-2013 on top of receiving  our District PR grant to air the Humanity In Motion Public Service Announcement, called You Are The Missing Piece which will reach 5.4  2 million people in all of Ontario, in Montreal, and in north eastern New York State. You have a Golden Opportunity to tell the world all about Rotary and our Rotary Club.

Advertising in newspapers  (in a similar manner to the Bowmanville Club that gets one page per month in the This Week Clarington Edition. Be repared to spend some of your company’s money . This is in no way a freebie.

  • Eamonn Doyle spent some time developing a similar plan for our club – no one has stepped forward to advertise ($500 for 4 ads about Rotary and our Rotary Club)
  • And Snap Oshawa has also spent some time developing a similar plan for our club – (about $440  for 4 ads about Rotary and our Rotary Club)
  • This year, the Club members showed little response to these initiatives.

  • Building a rapport with the media (newspapaers, TV , radio)  - It is time we had a media night at our club, where we invite all media to attend and one media person is the guest speaker and can brag about their business
  • Encouraging Rotarians to wear their Rotary lapel pins EVERYWHERE
  • Posting Rotary information and club events on our Club Website and on our club’s Facebook page and on the community calendars (TV and radio websites), on our District 7070 website or on another organization’s Web site

We have successfully launched our own Club’s website (www.rotaryoshawa-parkwood.org) . Bob Elliott has been added to our PR Committee and is doing a great deal of work populating the club website along with Dave Andrews.
Cameron Ackerblade has set up our club’s very own Facebook page. Try  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rotary-Club-of-Oshawa-Parkwood/144377628968467   You do not have to have a Facebook account to see this page. As of today, Dave Andrews is keeping it up to date.
And the new District 7070 website is filled with Rotary Info for our current and potential members.   www.rotary7070.org

Are you using them yet?. .

With the assistance of President Jodi Hewett, this year , we plan to work with The City of Oshawa to take over the sponsorship and all activities surrounding The Oshawa Walk of Fame – take nominations, select an inductee or 2, have a dinner honouring them, and getting their stone in The Walk of Fame.

These are just some plans that we will be working on for the rest of the Rotary Year.

Thanked By: President Jodi Hewett

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
