ROTARY MOMENT   None tonight

GUEST SPEAKER  :

Name of Speaker:

District Governor Brian Thompson – Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunriise

Introducer: Assistant Governor Wayne Routly

Thanked By: President Robbie Larocque

District Governor Brian’s Remarks:

District Governor Brain shared with us one of his many Rotary Moments, when he attended his first Rotary International Convention, in Toronto  with PDG Ken and Dorothy Hobbs of Whitby, back in the very early 1980’s. He was introduced to a gentleman named Clem who had help inoculate children in the Philippines to help prevent polio. District Governor Brian was impressed with the calibre and character of this Rotarian and knew that he joined the right organization. The next day, he discovered that “Clem” was Past President of Rotary International Sir Clem Renouf who stood up at Maple Leaf Gardens in front of 20,000 Rotarians and announced that the Philippines was Polio Free.

District Governor Brian went on to talk about the new Rotary Brand. After surveying 20,000 people (Rotarians and non-Rotarians) worldwide, it became very clear that people know what Rotary is but not what Rotary does. It was time for a change. Be sure to log in to the www.rotary.org website and read about the Rotary Brand. https://brandcenter.rotary.org/en-GB The survey firm found that Rotary was in a category of One. We do great things in the world, using our leadership skills and talents as professionals, but what sets us apart is that we connect club to club to meet our many challenges and the perseverance of Rotarians is unique and sets us apart from any other organization.

Through a District 7070 Quiz, District Governor Brian led us through our challenges with membership, donations to The Rotary Foundation by everyone in the club, every year, and he reminded us of our challenge from Rotary International President Gary Huang to Light Up Rotary, and have a Rotary Day in Oshawa to tell everyone who we are and what we do. Most of all District Governor Brian encouraged us all to have fun in what we are doing.

And he ended be telling everyone about our very clear mission that eradicating Polio from the face of the earth remains our number one priority, and our promise to the children of the world..

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
