GUEST SPEAKERS  :

Former Rotaract Club of Durham College / UOIT Presidents Haley McNamara and Christine Dabrowski on their trip to the Rotary International Convention is Sydney, Australia.

Introducer: Past President Marion Mills

Thanked By: Past District Governor Ted Morrison

Speaker’s Remarks:

As usual, both Haley and Christine were at their finest, presenting a professional PowerPoint presentation on their trip to the Rotary International Convention is Sydney, Australia, in June 2014, and their trip to New Zealand too.

Before they started, they briefly told us about the year of The Rotaract Club of Durham College/UOIT with their Fundraising Dinner to assist students at UOIT , that many of our Club members attended at Tosca in the fall of 2013; their meet and greet , also in the fall of 2013 , that a few our of Club members attended which also work to bring in many new Rotaractors; and their Slice of Life event which brought AIDS awareness to the campus.

While at the Rotary International Convention, they stayed with an Australian family, attended the per –convention of the Rotaractors worldwide, walked in a POLIO walk during the convention, attended the convention session, saw the flag ceremony with all of the flags from all over the world, listened to the current and future Rotary International Presidents speeches, and were pleased that they were both so engaging to the youth. They met many people from all over the world in the House of Friendship and learned that” everything you want to know about Rotary” was well represented in the House of Friendship. They were able to tour Cairns, Brisbane, and Sydney as well as New Zealand, during their adventure.

Haley McNamara is now a Life Residence Counselor at Seneca College’s Finch Campus where she is putting together an outreach program for community assistance in the area, with the students. Christine Dabrowski is a teacher at R.S.McLaughlin Collegiate, here in Oshawa, knows Stephanie Fox-Comery, and will assisting with the Interact Club at MCVI, this year.

They were thanks by Past District Governor Ted Morrison who said their enthusiasm for Rotary is always infectious. And Ted had a chance to tell us that in 2018, when the Rotary International Convention comes to Toronto, our club will be very much involved in The House of Friendship.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Or you can go online at www.rotary.org and find a club or clubs near your destination. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
