GUEST SPEAKERS  :

Name of Speakers:

President Cherlene Cheung of the Rotaract Club of Durham College and UOIT and her Executive: Nandi Sharma, Carolina Rodriguez, and Shane Dyer

Introducer: Bob Stewart (who also reminded us of a golf story)

Thanked By: Director Shawn Kellam

Their Remarks:

What a sincere opening as each of the four speakers recited one line from the Rotary Four way test, and they noted that the Rotaract executive uphold these values every day of their lives.

The Rotaract Club of DC and UOIT has 100 members and another 377 followers on their Facebook Page. They have new sweaters this year that will attract lots of “Rotaract” attention.

They have their own website, https://sites.google.com/site/rotaractdcuoit/  Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/rotaract.dc.uoit  and they are on Instagram, and Twitter.

Cherlene Cheung is studying Law; Nandi Sharma is studying medicine; Carolina Rodriguez ( a Rotary Exchange student and RYLA grad) is studying kinesiology;  and Shane Dyer (invited to join Rotaract by Haley Macnamara) is studying marketing.

The Rotaractors were very busy in the summer months: Carolina and Cherlene both attended RYLA in Belleville; many Rotaractors went to Interota in Toronto and Montreal, Haley and Christine attended the Rotary International Convention and Carolina returned from a year in France as a Rotary Exchange Student.

The Rotaract Club recently attend a “get Involved” Fair at the UOIT and signed up 100 members.

In the coming months they will be observing World polio Day, and on Oct 20, they will be having a  “Purple Pinkie”  Drive and will raffle off a Rotaract Sweatshirt. On Oct 22, they will be having a blood drive info booth for the school’s Nov 13 Blood Drive. The Rotary / Rotaract Scholars reception will be held on March 12, 2015. Our job will be to buy tickets to support the UOIT students who simply can’t afford to get through university. And continuing Charlene’s work with SIPAR, and the education program in Cambodia , from last year, the Rotaract Club will be collecting books, crayons, pencils etc and ship them over to the Rotary Club in Cambodia where she went to teach the children English.

They are also planning a Pay It Forward investment by giving out handprints o people who do good deeds at the schools. In January, they will be doing an awareness program on mental health.

The District 7070 Rotaract Clubs get together via Skype and will be at UOIT on Oct 17.

They will also be supporting the Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise “Slice of Life” program in the spring with AIDS awareness.

Editor’s Note: What an amazing group of young adults who exemplify the very best in Rotary values, each and every day.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
