ROTARY MOMENT   WHAT IS RYLA?

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range. In our District 7070, the age range is 19-30.

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth …….  by youth
  • Recognize publicly young people who are performing service projects in their communities

RYLAs often take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop, generally 3-10 days in length, organized by Rotarians at the club, district, or multidistrict level.

In our case, it is a  District program , that runs 5 days, under the leadership of PDG Mike Cooksey,

Participants are nominated and in our case , sponsored by local Rotary clubs.

For these young adults, this recognition offers the opportunity to build self-confidence, gain exposure to a variety of issues and people, meet active community leaders, and learn valuable information and career skills.

RYLA gives Rotarians the opportunity to mentor promising young leaders serving their own communities and beyond.

Rotarians serve as resources for participants on the path to becoming professional and community leaders.

In turn, RYLA can bring new energy to a Rotary district, inspire ideas for service, increase support of community service projects, and develop future Rotarians.

Originating in 1959 in Queensland, Australia, RYLA was created as a festival,  highlighting local youth organized in honor of a royal visit by Princess Victoria.

Through Rotarians’ constant belief in the potential of youth, RYLA has since become an opportunity to help the next generation of leaders define themselves and expand their skills.

And for this reason, RYLA is a service program under Rotary’s 5th and newest avenue of service - NEW GENERATIONS, now called Youth Service.

Officially adopted by Rotary International (RI) in 1971, this exciting program engages Rotary clubs and districts around the world.

Our District played hosted  RLYANS, sponsored by District 7070 Rotary Clubs for one week  in May of each year  at Loyalist College in Belleville.

The week was facilitated by Rotarians Rick including Past District Governor Valarie Wafer and  Christine Phelan of Toronto Sunrise Rotary Club.

The District 7070 RYLA program, introduces young participants and their families to the Rotary ideals of service each year.

Throughout the week, the youths engage in discussions on individual and group issues, and participate in simulated games where they learn by doing.

Every year, they spend a day volunteering in the local Community with a service project.

In addition to fellowship activities, the youths enjoy a combination of structured recreational activities and lectures delivered by industry professionals.
All the while, they have fun, build friendships, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

And tonight, we get to hear all about RYLA 2014, from Cherlene Cheung, our 2014 RYLA award winner.

GUEST SPEAKER  :

Name of Speaker:

Rotaract Club of Durham College / UOIT President Cherlene Cheung on her week at RYLA and her subsequent mission  in Cambodia.

Introducer: Past President Devon Biddle

Cherlene Cheung is this year’s President of the Rotaract Club of Durham College / UOIT and she is in her third year at UOIT studying human rights law. And she was chosen as our Awardee to the May 2014 Rotary Youth Leadership Award week at Loyalist College in Belleville.

Thanked By: Carol Reading

Cherlene’s Remarks:

Through a fantastic PowerPoint presentation Cherlene took us on her journey to RYLA and beyond. For the first three hours of her journey to Belleville for the week at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Cherlene was nervous, terrified, and scared. That did not last long. She was very impressed by many of the exercises, such as  trust and  teamwork, (both of which are so important to leadership skills), and she enjoyed the classroom time, the fellowship and the friendships that will last a lifetime. As a matter of fact, one person, Carolina, that she had never met before, was at RYLA and will be going into her first year at UOIT is now on the executive of the Rotaract Club with Cherlene.

Cherlene noted that the week at RYLA showed her that we must have fun in what we do and she really believes in the Rotary Four Way Test.

She took part in the DISC profiling which allowed her to learn more about herself as well as other people. The week really helped her prepare for her year as a Leader and President of the Rotaract Club of Durham College and UOIT.

She learned to push boundaries and learned to trust others.

One whole day she took part in the community service project which is a garden in the Quinte West Greenhouse, where she learned how to plant tomatoes and potatoes. The garden produces food for needy families in Belleville and for the Salvation Army too.

Another exercise taught the young leaders how to understand and how to improvise and how to incorporate everyone’s ideas . The 6th day was a Bar-b-que and presentations to Rotarians and the graduation ceremony.

Cherlene thanked the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood fro the tremendous opportunity to by a recipient of RYLA. She honed her leadership skills, public speaking skills, team building and formed new friendships and contacts.

She cam away motivated and inspired. That was in May 2014.

She was so inspired that she really wanted to do a community service project right then and there, somewhere in the world. She went to the Rotary website, searched community service projects and contacted a Rotary Club in Cambodia. And off she went, on her own to teach English to children in the rural villages outside Phnom Penh under some tough conditions. A very satisfying experience.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

Meeting the minimum attendance requirement is the responsibility of every Rotarian.

There are many benefits of attending Rotary Club meetings:

  • Fosters fellowship among club members
  • Provides opportunities to meet new people and reconnect with long-time friends
  • Keeps you current on club, district, and Rotary International news and events

There are many ways that a Rotarian can still receive attendance credit if he or she cannot attend home club meeting.

  • Attend a meeting of another club.
  • Attend a meeting of a Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Fellowship.
  • Attend certain District or RI meetings.
  • Participate in club-sponsored events or service project.
  • Attend a club Board or Service Committee meeting.
  • Participate in a E-club meeting for at least 30 minutes. The recent Council Of Legislation (COL) suggested 2 e-clubs per District.
  • Meetings of Other Clubs

You can make up at Rotary clubs all around the world, which allows you to:

  • Meet a new group of Rotarians
  • Observe how another club operates
  • Share information about your club
  • Make international contacts for club projects

A member can also make-up meetings at one of the following district or RI meeting:

  • District conference
  • District assembly
  • District committee meeting (at request of the District Governor)
  • RI Committee meeting
  • RI Convention

A member can also make-up meetings at Club-sponsored Events

  • Participating in a club-sponsored event is a great way to support the service work of your club and make-up a meeting.
  • Club service project
  • Club-sponsored community event
  • Other meetings or events as authorized by the club board
