THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

GUEST SPEAKER

Grandview Children’s Foundation, is a Registered Charity chartered in 1995. The Foundation’s sole reason for existence is to raise funds to support the work of Grandview Children’s Centre started in 1953. www.grandviewkids.ca

Grandview Children’s Centre is the only children’s treatment centre in Durham Region providing clinical outpatient paediatric rehabilitation treatment and specialized programs for children and youth with special needs and their families

Grandview was built in 1983 to serve 400 children per year. It now serves over 5,000 children and youth per year with physical and/or developmental disabilities, as well as children with specialized communication needs. Each month, a total of 5,000 therapeutic appointments occur at Grandview’s six sites across Durham Region.

Right now, 2,000 kids are waiting for services from Grandview. Some will wait for months. Others will wait for a year or more. Overwhelming evidence shows the critical importance of early intervention. It’s undeniable - the earlier a child begins therapeutic intervention, the greater the child’s chance of reaching his or her full potential. At present, potential is jeopardized for kids with special needs in Durham Region by Grandview’s outdated and undersized facilities

With the extension of highway 407 ETR and the approval of the sale of the land in Seaton, the population aged 0 to 19 is expected to increase, resulting in an estimated 10,000 kids with special needs requiring Grandview's services by the year 2031. Grandview needs a new facility, not only to meet current and future demand, but also to ensure that the best possible services are available for the children of this Region. New space also means being able to serve children with special needs using the best, most current methodology and technology.

Partnerships are a core component of Grandview Children’s Centre. The vision for a new building includes co-locating with local agencies to provide multi-agency access for families all under one roof, while advancing our work with post-secondary institutions in the areas of training, research and job creation. Expanded co-location opportunities with our current education partner and our paediatric medical experts will also be possible.

Grandview Kids in Durham Region deserve the best, and together the province and our community can give them just that. In 2015, the Town of Ajax led the way with the donation of a 5.6 acre parcel of land where we will build our new headquarters. The cost of the project is $44 million.!We are asking the provincial government for $34 million as we raise $10 million locally.

Project Goals:

To raise $10,000,000 toward the $44,000,000 building cost. Provincial government will fund $34,000,000, town of Ajax has donated a perfectly located 5.6 acres well suited for the needs of the Centre and children.

Over $7,000,000 has been raised to date: Estimated $2,600,000 from the sale of the existing Centre located in Oshawa, $3,000,000 from the Region of Durham, $1,400,000 from Foundation reserves (past donors) as well as donations and pledges from individuals and corporations

Leaving just under $3,000,000 from the Durham Community: These funds are to be raised from contributions provided by Durham Region Service Clubs, Corporations and Individuals.

A Capital Campaign Committee of volunteers has been established to assist the Foundation staff who oversee and support the committee. The Foundation office currently has only two full-time staff with part-time support for finances, communications and family coordination.

Time Line: Obtain the $3,000,000 in donations and/or commitment over 2016 and 2017. Pledges paid over time to be received within 5 years of commencement.

Population Profile:

Grandview Children’s Centre serves the needs of the Durham Region community Urban and Rural

Target Groups: Children from birth to age 19.

How will the project beneficiaries be involved: Many of the families with special needs children face day to day struggles that limit their ability to assist financially or with time. That said you see numerous families and Grandview Kids show up to speak publicly and to represent Grandview as Ambassadors. Also it’s known that families as well as their extended families and friends in a financial position to assist with program requests and this Capital Campaign do say happily. We have eight families who are devoted to the capital campaign and help in a variety of ways including being featured in materials and making presentation.

Stage of Project: The project is at a Start Up, the land was donated in 2015 and the Durham Region’s pledge was added into the Regions budget in the same year. We are expecting final approval from the Ontario government shortly.

FUNDING INFORMATION:

Amount requested from the Rotary Clubs within Durham –Each club has different resources and abilities, I look forward to discussing with your club at what level you are able to assist.

We are seeking $3,000,000 in total. It’s my personal hope as a Rotarian that the Rotary Clubs of Durham Region will contribute $500,000.000 toward the building of the New Grandview.

Approved community funding as stated above; over $7,000,000 (including sale of existing building).

Grandview Children’s Centre has been the recipient of program funding from Durham Rotary Club’s for many years. This request is the only Capital Funding request since 1983 and is expected to be the only one for decades to come.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS:

Also I’d like to extend an invite to tour the current Grandview facility to better understand the need and the value the Centre brings to the kids and their families

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
