What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Chair Linda Porritt at 905-626-6386 or our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Mike McLaren at 905-571-4222.

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

2016-2017 ROTARY THEME: “ROTARY – SERVING HUMANITY”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT: John Germ – Rotary Club of Chttanooga, Tennessee,USA

R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Jim Louttit - Rotary Club of Toronto-Sunrise in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

ASSISTANT DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Beth Selby – Rotary Club of Belleville in Belleville, Ontario, Canada

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas,

join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

  9.

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

ROTARY MOMENT Pres Dave gave a brief overview of the Adventure in Citizenship Program which led into the intro of our guest speaker

ADVENTURE IN CITIZENSHIP:

In 1951,The Rotary Club of Ottawa established its annual "Adventure in Citizenship" Program in which some 220 senior high school students, from across Canada, spend four days in Ottawa experiencing tours, lectures, discussions and social events designed to enhance their understanding and appreciation of Canadian citizenship.

Public figures including former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, the Right Hon. Joe Clark, and the Hon. Ed Broadbent participated in the program as students.

This annual event provides a unique opportunity for a selected group of young Canadians to come together to gain a better understanding of our country.

Through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and others, they learn a great deal about the workings of our democratic institutions.

Through meeting one another and having discussions among themselves, they learn to appreciate the diversity of Canada and the privileges and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.

As an opportunity to serve our youth of Oshawa, our own Rotary Club's Youth Services Committee , under the leadership of Director Kim Boatman and at the suggestion of our own Robert Kipling , selected Souma Sayah and we will hear from her very soon.

And that is just one of the many community service projects of our Rotary Club. Our service to Youth.

And that is tonight's Rotary Moment

May 9 - page 3

GUEST SPEAKER :

Souma Sayah was introduced by Rotarian Robert Kipling.

Souma immigrated with her family to Canada in 2004. She became a Canadian Citizen on May 2, 2008. She is a Grade 12 student and will be attending York University this fall. Souma is a neighbour of Robert and Caroline. The Rotary Club of Oshawa Parkwood sponsored Souma to attend the Adventure in Citizenship in Ottawa.

Souma spoke enthusiastically about her recent experience in Ottawa which included a power point presentation. Two hundred students from across Canada met for the first time and over four action packed days became friends forever. Some of the many opportunities were attending Parliament and hearing the Speaker of the House, the War Museum and learning about the World Wars, our veterans and peace keeping efforts, a visit to the University of Ottawa, the First Nations Centre. All 200 participated in renewing the Oath of Citizenship which was special for Souma who was too young (at age 8yrs) to repeat the oath withher family in 2008.

Rotarian Kim Boatman thanked Souma indicating that our Club was pleased to support her and appreciated her enthusiastic presentation.
