OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF OSHAWA-PARKWOOD

Mailing Address: 96 KING ST. E., OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA L1H 1B6

What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Chair Linda Porritt at 905-626-6386 or our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Mike McLaren at 905-571-4222.

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

2016-2017 ROTARY THEME: “ROTARY – SERVING HUMANITY”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT: John Germ – Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tennessee,USA

R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Jim Louttit - Rotary Club of Toronto-Sunrise in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

ASSISTANT DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Beth Selby – Rotary Club of Cobourg in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Guest Speakers

Pres. Dave Andrews Introduced Don Lovisa President of Durham College and Linda Marco, President of the Durham College Foundation and Vice President of Development and Alumni Affairs. They will speak to us tonight abouththe 50th Anniversary of Durham College and about the launch of a new building at the Simcoe Street North campus.

Don Lovisa spoke about 50 Amazing Years – the Community College system is also celebrating 50 years. It was started in Ontario in 1967, and Durham College was started in the same year.

Currently there are over 11,000 students per year. This is a 63% increase since 2008. Analysis shows that the College has an $816 million dollar economic impact on Durham Region every year. The College system has grown enormously, with online courses, partnering with UOIT, helping students complete high school on their way to a college education,, and soon to be offering degree programs

Linda Marco.spoke about the new Centre for Collaborative Education that is being built as a legacy project in honour of the 50th anniversary of Durham College. The Building will cost $40 million, the province has committed $22 million. The Federal government is contributing $13 million and Durham College is raising $5 million from the community. The building is scheduled to open in April 2018. There will be an Innovation Centre which will incubate Entrepreneurial Activities. Unique to Ontario there will be a Global Glass, a network of 45 institutions worldwide with whom Durham College partners.

Linda also thanked the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood for its donation of $15,000 in support of the signature Whitby campus initiative now known as the W. Galen Weston Centre for Food.

President Dave thanked the speakers and presented them with Certificates showing donations by the Club to the Polio Foundation in their honour.

Pres Dave Adjourned the meeting..

The “ideal of service” is the key.

  It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
