We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders. 

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

• Dave Penney announced the Catch the Ace jackpot is now $840; keep on selling tickets!  Dave will be contacting BUMP to inquire how they can assist with marketing.

• World Polio Day – Polio flags will be at City Hall and Regional Headquarters from September 18 to 24

• Dave Andrews provided details of World Polio Day Broadcast on October 22

• Foundation Walk is on Sunday, September 26 and $1,275.00 has been raised: Al & Hilda, Ted & Sharron and Dave Andrews plan to walk

• Hilda will be taking tulips to walk; great idea

• President Dave will be away for two weeks and Jan will take his place

• Sue announced a letter of appreciation has been received from the City of Oshawa for our clean up efforts in the spring

• Peter Dueck is recovering from a heart attack and is how at his daughters house in Whitby.  He would be happy to hear from his fellow Rotarians:  905-668-0435 or cell:  905-706-7137

Dave Andrews introduced Don Lovisa, President of Durham College.

Don will tell you he has the best job anywhere in Canada, how is that for compassion!  He has been in post-secondary education for 35years, the last 14 at Durham College, starting as vice-president of Academic.  Don has a Bachelor of Arts, Masters in International Management, a diploma in Adult Education and has completed the course work for a PhD in Community College Leadership through the University of Toronto.

Don shared his enthusiasm with many recent accomplishments, pertaining to the Covid 19 pandemic. Vaccination policy for staff and students is in place and the requirement is to be fully vaccinated prior to October 17.  All 24 Ontario Colleges have the same policy.

The college expects to be 100% back to school, January 2022.

Other highlights:

• Global Classroom renamed to Rotary Global Classroom

• For 10 years in a row, Durham College has been a top 10 employer and for 5 years maintained the greenest college in Canada status

• Many local students and stay local with 1,800 international students

• 8 full bachelor degrees are now offered

• Within a week of lockdown, classes were on line for a total of 44,000 classes on line

• Durham is a top research college with 5 areas of focus; expanding to 6; capital projects saw success

• Companies from all over GTA, rely on Durham College for their innovation in trades; recently rocket testing;
  7,000 applications received for trade with 2,300 openings

• 1,800 students graduated in June, precautions were taken

• Enrollment is on budget; covid has significantly impacted budget, creating a deficit

• College business course is affordable, $2,700 per year; $8,500 elsewhere with International students paying $11,000 per year,  International students coming from 85 countries with India and Pakistan being the top 2

Answers to Questions:

• Bistro is now open; food Bistro was not able to use was donated to Community Care

• No problem with students from other countries (Russia) when campus had gaming competition

• Global competitions, 8 Varsity Gaming Teams compete from Durham College.

To our very own Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian Eric Guernsey for arranging the Zoom Meeting sharing with Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority, The Durham Workforce Authority is the acknowledged provider of local workforce information and champion of workforce development initiatives unique to Durham Region. Their Mission is to produce and offer comprehensive Labour Market Information to our stakeholders, to facilitate workforce solutions by engaging community partners and employers and to encourage development and maintenance of a sustainable and dynamic workforce. It was so nice to be able to have a whole hour for our Zoom meeting. We look forward to all of our Zoom meetings and thank you both, for all of your help.

OUR REGULAR WEEKLY MEETINGS STILL ON ZOOM AND WILL NOT BE AT THE OSHAWA GOLF CLUB UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
