THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 1. Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW_on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave.

2. Ted encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

3. Robbie announced that that we have APR 1 and 2 as dates to volunteer at Purple Woods pancake breakfast. Volunteers could include spouses , children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors. Robbie passed around the Purple Woods Pancake breakfast information and dates. (see: https://www.cloca.com/maple-syrup-festival )

4. 2023-24 Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS) is Feb 4 - take note Linda

5.  Rotary Leadership Institute  - PART I is Wednesday evenings in February  8 15 AND 22 FROM 6 TO 8 PM – Please register TODAY: https://rotary7070.org/event/copy-of-district-7070-rli-part-1--sep-14--21-and-28th-2022/. Robbie encouraged members to sign up for a refresher about Rotary.

6. In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host. There are only 30 spots available!  Online applications and further details will be available on the Rotary District 7070 website and all District social media channels by January 31, 2023. Stay tuned!!

7. Lennis announced Easter celebrations at the Kids Safety Village April 7 & 8 from 10am until 2pm. 4 Volunteers needed from our club each day.

ACE OF SPADES: Winner was Bob Koski. Ted Morrison shuffled the cards and Bob drew the 2 of Clubs. He received a “Rotary” Chocolate bar as a consolation The pot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS:

1. Dave A. Was happy to talk to Al and Hilda by phone today. They gave their regards to everyone. The weather has been great. Al’s wrist is sore.

2. Robert Kipling was happy because he and Caroline paid a visit to Peter and Elfreda Dueck this week. Peter is doing well. He will be celebrating his 90^th birthday on the 8^th of February.

3. Robbie was happy that his son sems to be settling in at Durham College. He bought his books recently. – a good sign.

4. Ted announced the death of Assistant Governor and current Disaster Relief Coordinator for District 7070- Michael Parker from the Rotary Club of Cobourg.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Peter Taylor – President of The Friends of The Second Marsh

Peter Taylor is the President of the Board of Directors of The Friends of the Second Marsh. He was introduced by David A.

Peter currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of Friends of the Second Marsh, a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to encouraging the protection and appreciation of Second Marsh, our natural heritage system, and to promoting a healthy environment through education, communication, developing partnerships and fostering connections with all sectors of the community. For the past thirty-five years, FSM (formerly the Second Marsh Defense Association, credited with protecting Oshawa Second Marsh from harbour development) has provided leadership to the community-based movement that secured the future of this unique wetland.

The SECOND MARSH is a 137 ha coastal wetland located in the southeast portion of Oshawa, just east of the harbour. 

The combination of Second Marsh with the adjacent areas of McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve and Darlington Provincial Park represents nearly 400 hectares, one of the largest publicly accessible waterfront spaces available in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Peter has been fortunate to live and work in various parts of the world. Wherever he has been, he has derived great pleasure from exploring the outdoors. Since moving to Oshawa in 1978, he has been an admirer and user of the Second Marsh. Over the years, he and his children and grandchildren have made multiple trips to the marsh and lakeside.

Peter described the marsh as “magical” with hundreds of animal and plant species not seen anywhere else in the area.

He showed slides of many animals and plants that you would see if you walked through the marsh on the walkways.

 Our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood provided the signage back in the 1980s along the trails.

The second marsh is threatened by pollution of all types- air,water and noise.

Peter says the Friends of the Second Marsh are looking for donations but more importantly_ they are looking for volunteers.

On Earth Day, April 22, 2023, as Rotarians prepare for the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup for 2023, the Second Marsh would greatly appreciate our assistance in cleaning up the Marsh area.
