We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Lennis announced that the Kids Safety Village Board & Committee meeting is next Monday, January 16 at 2pm

2. Larry announced that a $2000 donation had been made to the Ukrainian refugees in Durham. He also told us that Tim takes his Uranian refugee family, staying with him to the Ukrainian Food bank on Tuesday’s from 6-9pm so it will make it difficult for Tim to make our meetings.  Larry also announced that the community Service committee approved a $1000 donation to Simcoe Hall (Community Programs & Food Bank) – see: https://simcoehall.com)

3.  Robbie passed around the Purple Woods Pancake breakfast information and dates. (see: https://www.cloca.com/maple-syrup-festival )

ACE OF SPADES: Winner was David Penney who drew the 7 of Spades. The pot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS:

1. Bill Creamer was happy to pass his written, sight and driving tests to renew his licence

2. Jean-Claude M was happy to be here after recovering from illness last week.

3. Dave A reported that he, along with Ted, went to Barry Vail’s funeral in Cobourg last Saturday. There was a  large turnout of Rotarians.

4. Lennis was happy that he was finally able to get Tony from the Salvation Army out as a potential new member.

5. John Kellam was happy that he and his brother are taking a car to Phoenix to the big auction.

6   Ted was happy to hear the RIPE Gordon McInally give his theme speech ( see the video: https://youtu.be/eF1-Gfz5Ipk and his address: https://www.rotary.org/en/r-gordon-r-mcinally-wants-rotary-members-create-hope-world )  using a key phrase that Ted used in his Governor address to clubs 13 years ago, “ Hope lies in imagination and in dreams, and in the courage of those who make dreams come true…isn’t that what we do we make dreams come true hence we give people hope.” Next year’s theme is “CREATE HOPE in the world” . Ted also paid for a lunch for a homeless man in Toronto that made him feel real joy.

7.  David Penney drove all the way to Toronto  (all the way down to Young and Bay) without having to slow down for traffic...That’s a first.

8. Rob Stewart was happy to recognize Rhonda’s birthday

GUEST SPEAKER:  Jean-Claude Mbazumutima – Water Project in Burundi

Jean Claude was introduced by Bob Koski.

Jean Claude talked about his country of Barundi. This is a land-locked country whose 12 million. People  are mostly  impoverished.  He specifically made a reference to the village where he grew up and the difficulty the families there have getting water. He showed pictures of the school that he attended and the distance children have to walk to get water.

He has organized a project to bring water close to the school in the first step and finally to the school in step two. The piping would have to travel between 2-9 km and the water would flow gravity fed. He has applied and received a district grant and he is looking for money from clubs to round out the costs.

It was a vey interesting talk with heart breaking videos and slides._
