THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 1. Sue announced that Bingo was scheduled for Saturday March 25 matinee this week. Ted, David A , Bill, and Sue should arrive at 11am.

2. Sue announced Easter celebrations at the Kids Safety Village April 7 & 8 from 10am until 2pm. We need 6 to 8 Rotary Club Volunteers needed from our club each day. Sue has Police check applications . Please fill out and give to Sue as soon as possible. (Need  a new one every 6 months).   Sue passed around a sign up sheet for volunteers

3. Sue also announced she is meeting with Holly to arrange for our Paul Harris night possibly upstairs with a special meal.

4. Ted announced the people who have signed up for Purple Woods Pancake Breakfast. We are asked to arrive at 8:30 am. And park on the west side of the parking lot.

5. Ted asked the members to consider sponsoring Sharron in a bowl-a-thon for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Clarington. (and she thanks everyone for their generosity)

6. Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave. Over 90 tickets out so far.

7. Ted M and Dave A. encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Take a photo of the item, get a retail value and send to Dave A so he can add to the website and social media. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

8. We have APR 1 and 2 as dates to volunteer at Purple Woods Pancake Breakfast. Volunteers could include spouses , children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors. Robbie is the liason with Purple Woods for the Maple Syrup Festival and Ted is looking after the sign up sheet.  We have 13 each day!  On the day of event, our names and contact info will be required.  Best to arrive at 8:30 for good parking. Event open from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm  (see: https://www.cloca.com/maple-syrup-festival ) Ted Morrison has organized the details of our club’s volunteer efforts. Everyone knows when they will be there. Wear your Rotary clothes and a hat if you are serving pancakes.

9.  In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host. There are only 30 spots available!  Online applications and further details will be available on the Rotary District 7070 website and all District social media channels by January 31, 2023. We have selected Morgan Joy and she has applied to be our candidate. Morgan has assisted our club at the Farmers Market, at Kids Against Hunger, and on the Great Lakes Cleanup, just to name a few. Still some spots available. If you know of another candidate, there is a form to fill out (see the District 7070 March Newsletter for details).

16. APR 21 – Waverly Public School Play Day – New Playground equipment will officially open. This may be a great day for a grand opening. Perhaps our Club could arrange the Grand Opening with Sherri Parr on this day. Community Service Committee to review with Sherri.

17. APR 22 – EARTH DAY– Great Lakes Water Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Second Marsh with Oshawa and Courtice  Rotary Clubs. Bring your own water (in a reusable bottle) and a picker if you have one. Rotarian and families (sign up sheet will go around). Civic Leaders also invited. Park along Col Sam Drive near Second marsh sign (on south side of road).

1.David Penney was happy to host a special birthday party for his mother-in-law who turned 100 years old on the weekend.

2.Bill Creamer was his happy that his son bought a larger house on a 2 acre lot in Enniskillen.. possible site for Parkwood Rotary summer picnic.

3.David Mankiewicz received a special industry award for his work.

4.Linda Porritt also received an award from century 21 Silver Level award top 1% in the GTA.

5. Everyone thanked John Kellam for his generous donation of dessert tonight.

GUEST SPEAKER:   BRADY BODLEY – HIS CLASSIFICATION / CRAFT TALK  

Brady is a lawyer in Oshawa. He talked about getting his law degree in England and a Business degree at UOIT in Oshawa. He explained the differ types of law he works in  - corporate , tax, family, estate law. He wanted to become a vet but his aptitude was not in the sciences. He enjoys martial arts and boxing.. He was basically raised by his grandparents. His grandfather is a long-standing Rotarian in Port Perry – Jim Brady.  He joined Rotaract while in Oshawa and that led him to Rotary AND Oshawa Parkwood.

His talk gave us all a better insight into just who Brady is.
