Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

 

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders. 

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

 

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land AcknowledgementWe respectfully acknowledge that the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood is meeting on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, within the jurisdiction of the Williams Treaties.  We are committed to our responsibility of stewardship, in these relationships and for this land on which we learn, share and live.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES: Friday September 20, will be Hilda and AL's 21st anniversary. CONGRATULATIONS

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

There was a very nice tribute to Sue MacKinnon , since this is her last meeting with us. Sue is moving to Vancouver to be closer to her family.  Hilda, Linda, Janice and Emmy all said some very nice things about Sue's work as a Rotarian and as a person. We will miss you Sue.. Sue responded to the club . There was a cake that Sue cut for all the members.

 

 

 The club received the Rotary Citation from Rotary International for meeting the criteria set out for clubs to achieve. Hilda presented it to Past President Linda Porritt since it was earned in Linda's year as President

Hilda informed the club that we have made the decision to incorporate in line with the new Ontario Not For Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) Leon has agreed that his Law firm will act on our behalf. Our bylaws must also be reviewed and revised  by a committee of Don, Dave A and Ted.

Sue's resignation as Secretary on the Board has been filled by the appointment of Janice Coupland.

BINGO this Thursday Ted,,Lennis Robbie and Hilda , The next one is Sept 28 Linda (Irina shadowing) ,Dave A, Al and Hilda.  Hilda passed around the schedule for October through December . Please sign up . More members needed for the bingo teams.

We are back at the North Oshawa Farmer's market selling composted manure, birdhouses and now tulips bulbs for polio. This Saturday is a free corn roast at the market. Ted and Sharron will be the sellers this week . On September 28 the sellers will be Dave P and Emmy.

Rotary club of Whitby Sunrise have invited us to the unveiling of “the Peace Pole” to celebrate international Day of Peace Saturday Sept 21 @ 10am at the Whitby waterfront trail. This is a first for Durham Region.

Dave A reminded  everyone of our World Polio Day celebration at Durham College on Oct 18. If you are coming to Durham College , please online TODAY so they will have enough food for everyone. There will be no club meeting that week on Tuesday.

SEP 18 – Rotary Club of Whitby - The Rotary Club of Whitby would like to invite you and your members to join us for an evening of Rotary fun and fellowship on Wednesday, Sept. 18. We have reserved the opening night of the award-winning musical "Million Dollar Quartet" in Whitby for Durham Rotary clubs only (including spouses/partners). This high-quality production is being staged at the Centennial Building and is produced by DreamCo, a professional theatre company founded by local artistic director Phil Nero. It has sold out to audiences in other communities, so we promise a great show! Reminder:  the Kids Against Hunger date will be Saturday November 2 from 8:30 am to 2 pm at the  Jubilee Pavillion. We will need at least 20 Rotarians, spouses and family members from each of the  6 clubs participating.

 

SGT AT ARMS  Tess Pierce

ACE OFSPADES David Penney , again this week,  drew the 8 of hearts. The pot grows bigger . It is now over $500

 

HAPPY BUCKS:

1. Tess was happy because she is wearing cute socks!

2. Emmy was happy to congratulate Sue on making the move to be closer to her family. He was also happy to attend Their Opportunity’s support and the unveiling in Parkdale of phase two of  a project that the African-Canadian coalition has developed.

3. Dave A will miss Sue and thanked her for her lead in our Yard Sale.

4  Dave P thanked Sue for scheduling him at Delta bingo on the 10pm-midnight shift!!!!

5. Bob Stewart also thanked Sue for her work with the club. He also told story of a cat in a tree in the golf course . They had to bring the cherry picker in to get it down.

6  Linda also was sorry to see Sue go and for what she did with our successful Yard Sale.

 

 

7  Sue was happy to show off her new ear rings she bought at our Yard sale.

8. Hilda thanked Sue for her hard work as Secretary and we will all miss her dedication .

9. Bob Koski thanked Sue for the yard sale and thanked Dave and Al for saving his marriage when he inadvertantly forgot to bring his wife's purchases home. They found them and returned them to him.

SPEAKER  No Speaker tonight. Instead, the Directors all gave an update on what has been happening so far this year.

President Hilda  talked about the appointment of Janice Coupland  as Secretary to the Board of Directors.

Bingo continues to bring a substantial amount of money to our club. We still need more volunteers to add to our bingo teams.

We will be working on incorporation this fall.

AL : PUBLIC RELATIONS  Al spoke about the social media accounts we have. we publish four times/month things that will promote our club. We also have lots of pens to hand out. New members should ask for some so you can hand them out to friends and prospective members.

LINDA:  TREASURER Linda spoke about the Ways and Means committee that set a goal of raising $68,840 and spending plan that will spend $68,700 . From the membership invoices she received $1400 for Foundation and $1,090 for polio eradication. She also announced that the club profit at the Yard Sale was $945.

DAVID P.:  INTERNATIONAL SERVICE  David said the malaria global grant project in Africa is proceeding nicely . We are the lead club in District 7070. We were asked to raise $10,000 and we actually raised $15,900. The committee also approved donating to a water project in Uganda. However that has been delayed due to ill health of the chief organizer, Richard Mewhinney. We pledged $2,000 to Steve Routledge's continuing water project "Adopt a Village in Laos".

TED:  ROTARY FOUNDATION Ted spoke about the importance of giving to The Rotary Foundation. Our goal this year is to have our members donate $4,000 to the annual fund and $1,500 to polio

So far this year we collected $1300 for the Jasper Wildfire Relief Fund (if you pledged get your money to Linda ASAP)

Members have pledged money to the Foundation Walk . All monies are Paul Harris Fellow eligible.

Tulips for polio get your boxes from Hilda and sell to your neighbors ,friends and family. All money raised goes to polio.

Ted reminded us all that "Rotary takes ordinary men and women and gives them extraordinary opportunities to do more with their lives than they ever dreamed possible"

ROBBIE:  CLUB ADMINISTRATION  Everyone should have lists of names and addresses. Bulletin and Sgt-at-arms positions have been filled but we still need someone to volunteer to do a stint at the front desk

BILL:  COMMUNITY SERVICE Bill was absent but in his absence Hilda said we have given the next installment of our promised donation to Durham College $3,000

JOHN: MEMBERSHIP John was ill and has not had a meeting of his committee. But our membership has grown considerably since the beginning of the year.

DAVID A  : EXECUTIVE SECRETARY  ANNOUNCED THAT THE ROTARY CITATION THAT WE RECEIVED TONIGHT IS GETTING A NEW NAME. THIS YEAR IT WILL BE CALLED "THE ROTARY CLUB EXCELLENCE AWARD". You can see our progress on the Rotary International website . by logging into myRotary
