THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW_on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave.

2. Dave A. encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

3. We have APR 1 and 2 as dates to volunteer at Purple Woods Pancake Breakfast. Volunteers could include spouses , children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors. Robbie is the liason with Purple Woods for the Maple Syrup Festival and Ted is looking after the sign up sheet.  We have 13 each day!  On the day of event, our names and contact info will be required.  Best to arrive at 8:30 for good parking. 4.  Rotary Leadership Institute  - PART I is Wednesday evenings in February  8 15 AND 22 FROM 6 TO 8 PM – Please register TODAY: https://rotary7070.org/event/copy-of-district-7070-rli-part-1--sep-14--21-and-28th-2022/. Robbie encouraged members to sign up for a refresher about Rotary.

5. In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host. There are only 30 spots available!  Online applications and further details will be available on the Rotary District 7070 website and all District social media channels by January 31, 2023. Stay tuned!!

6. Lennis announced Easter celebrations at the Kids Safety Village April 7 & 8 from 10am until 2pm. We need 6 to 8 Rotary Club Volunteers needed from our club each day. Please sign up with Sue MacKinnon. Sue will have Police check applications after the next KSV Committee meeting.

HAPPY BUCKS:

Sue MacKinnon –  Florida trip great except for lost and then found suit case.

Bob Stewart  - outlined his theory on horse racing. Pick the loser of the first race and bet for in the second race to win—especially if grey—sure winner.

Dave Andrews –great Saturday at PETS training as the trainer of course. Back-to-back lectures.

Bob Koski – granddaughter studying at Guelph--- made the dean’s list AGAIN. Chip off the old block.

Lennis Trotter – happy  -  his furnace fixed – and electricity pole was also a problem that was not attended to in a timely manner. Okay now

GUEST SPEAKER:  Durham Regional Police Service  - Detective Martin Franssen

Dave Andrews introduced our speaker Det Martin Franssen. Det Franssen started his career in the military and followed that into policing. He has had a long and distinguished career. His focus is now on fraud, particularly cases involving seniors as victims. He is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Oshawa.

He stressed being aware. Not giving out personal information. A fraudster is looking for personal information. Your phone number, your age group, your sex etc. etc. all valuable information in finding a likely victim. Losses are in the 100’s of millions.

Don’t answer the cell phone when you do not recognize the incoming number. Ignore the call. If you pick up the call, hang up. Don’t answer text messages if you don’t know the sender.

Use a safety “password” that family know. If the caller doesn’t know the password hang-up.

Don’t share credit cards and pins. Use a gift card if someone needs to shop for you.

 Don’t react to computer scams by responding to offers or any request for information. Shut your computer down – off button or pull the plug if you have mistakenly engaged. Develop complex passwords. Use a pass phrase that is easy for you to remember but hard to be discovered.

 Have a well considered will, Have respective powers of attorney.

Take advice on how to protect title to your property and familiarize yourself with mortgage fraud. Go to the land titles office a do a search on your property. Make sure title is clear or that there are only proper liens registered.

Bob Stewart thanked Martin and presented him with our polio certificate as a token of the club’s appreciation for his exceptionally informative presentation.
