THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement:

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

- Cakes & Hams - Cakes and Hams are arriving on Monday November 28th @ MAK. Volunteers are needed to offload.  Pick up will be available at Bill Creamer’s - will just need to let him know when you plan to come. Send payment by e transfer or give directly to Treasurer Bill.

• Orono Santa Claus Parade is Sat. Nov. 26th 10:30 am (Ted playing Santa!)

Hilda Finnigan:

 - Nov 28th at 11:30 am at Wendel Clark’s (Holiday Inn Express) - our joint meeting with the Oshawa Club and District Governor Iosif Ciosa. $20 + tax, Buffet. Bring a Food Bank Donation.

- Need a Bulletin Editor for March. Ted Morrison will cover January. David Penney will cover February.

- Dec 13th is the club Christmas party at Bella Notte in Whitby. 6pm $52/person.

-Updated membership list was sent out - there are a couple of updates on email addresses.

- Janice Coupland will be handling meals while Hilda is gone.

- Nov 29th - No club meeting. Reverse Draw Committee will meet at 7 pm at the DG Biddle offices

.- Dec 3rd is the annual Sharon’s Kids breakfast and collection of gift donations. The event is a drive through 8 am to 10 am. Enter the parking lot off of Orchard View.

 - Dec. 10th is the new date for the Feed the Need Concert. Venue change to the Biltmore at 39 King St E in Oshawa. Cost $30/ticket.

Larry Hurren:

 - A meeting of the Community Services Committee to be held tonight after the club meeting.

Happy Bucks:

Hilda Finnigan - Not long now until Hilda & All go south for a few months. Thank you to all who have volunteered to take her duties while she is gone

David Penney - Got his 5th Shot today.

Larry Hurren - Recently celebrated Kay’s Mom’s 97th Birthday, then she got Covid but is now recovered. Larry & family went to LA. Had a good time. It’s very expensive there! Amazing trip.

Al Finnigan - Always good to see Emmy Iheme.

Emmy - put in $5 - always happy to visit Oshawa-Parkwood. He attended the Night of a 1000 Dinners last week, and was pleased to sit ata table with many of our members.

David Andrews - Enjoyed the Night of 1000 Dinners and looking forward to a repeat next year. $4,000 was raised to help save lives by removing landmines in Cambodia. Also attended the 100th Anniversary of the Cobourg club and there was lots of support from across the district.

Robert Kipling - Canada plays a World Cup soccer match tomorrow, first in 36 years. In 1986 they did not score a goal. Robert is confident they will do better this year.

Ted Morrison - Also happy to attend the Night of 1000 Dinners. Wilf Wilkerson & wife were there. Happy also to have attended the Cobourg club’s 100th Anniversary lunch. Last night Ted spoke at the Port Hope Club. Sharron is away for 3 days of shopping - could be hard on his wallet!

SPEAKER:   Emmy Iheme – 2023 Ontario Parasport Games

Past-President Dave Andrews introduced our guest speaker, Emmy Iheme.  Emmy is well known to our club. He is Past-President of the Rotary Club of Oshawa, Retired Staff-Sergeant for the Durham Regional Police Services. Emmy is currently the co-chair (with Willy Woo, Councillor from Clarington) of the Fundraising Committee for the Ontario 2023 Parasport Games. The Games are being held in Durham Region February 3 to 5, 2023.

Presentation:

The Ontario 2023 Parasport Games will feature 550 Athletes. The athletes, plus coaches, family, and friends will provide a good amount of economic benefit to Durham Region. Venues for the events are across Durham. including Curling which will be held at the Oshawa Golf & Curling Club.

Durham hosted the Ontario Parasport Games in 2019. Feedback was that they were the best games to date. Estimated community economic benefit was $1,000,000 in 2019. The Games received several awards that year, including an award for Economic Development from the Lieutenant Governor and Sports Event of the Year from Sports Tourism Canada. In 2019 the Games Committee raised $120,000 more than was needed for the event and they created a Legacy Fund. Those funds are to be used to support accessibility and venues for disabled athletes. For example $25,000 was used to remove obstacles to accessibility for Sledge Hockey at Iroquois Park Arena in Whitby. The charity Their Opportunity received the balance of funds to go to athletes with disabilities.

The overall budget this year is $465,000. They have received a $100,000 grant from the Ontario Government. The balance of funds needed have already been raised, either as donations of cash or goods in kind. The Goal is to increase the Legacy Fund to $165,000. All funds from charitable groups like Rotary will go to the Legacy Fund. The plan for the funds is to equip all of the schools in Durham with sports equipment to accommodate young athletes with disabilities. This will include equipment for sitting volleyball, Bocce, and wheelchair basketball.

In 2019 every athlete received a package with a toque, mitts and scarf knitted by volunteers. The balance of the knitted items were sold for game souvenirs. They are working on a similar package for 2023.

Even if all the event volunteer spots are filled, there is a special category of volunteers called “Be The Roar”. If you volunteer as part of “Be The Roar”, you will attend one or more events to cheer on the athletes!!
