WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Club President President Hilda Finnigan at 905-431-4258 or Club Past President Linda Porritt at 905-626-6386

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Tess – A colleague of Tess, Dr Shilpa Dogra, at Ontario Tech, is conducting EngAge and has asked for seniors to volunteer to help edit workbooks. The program is focused on supporting people over the age of 65 years of age who are inactive with reducing their sedentary time. We recently completed a pilot study and have heard loud and clear that the workbooks we designed are missing the mark.

-    sent a copy of the EngAge workbooks to read and review

Alex’s civilian career has been in the media and entertainment industry for over 30 years. He has worked on numerous film, television and video projects in a variety of roles, such as producing web videos for Canadian Tire, and appearing on screen in CNN's "Race for the White House", as well as "Web of Lies" and "Motives and Murders" on the Investigation Discovery Channel.  Some other career highlights including having worked at Turner Entertainment Networks, Rogers Communications, Inc., and several projects with comedian and talk-show host, Steve Harvey.

Alex Wood has also worked in higher education, having taught for the Communication Department at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, and is currently a professor in the Media Studies Department at the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto, ON.  He is also the author of the recently published book, “101 Things I want my (adult) Child to Know”.

Having researched Rotary Alex recognized that Rotarians are leaders in our communities and that our mission is service.

He talked to us about building a foundation for effective leadership. He said that we need to pour it onto young people to ensure that they have the skills for both service and leadership.

Alex referenced:

“Acting For Real” by Thom McFadden

What Paul Whitten got out of Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E Lawrence (see: Paul Whitten )

Alex quoted Dr King when he said to serve, we need to be a servant first. Everyone can serve.

He added that leadership is the ability to guide and inspire people to reach a common goal. He added that vision fosters growth.

Alex talked about 3 tools (skills and methods) to be a leader: (balance. observant, and present – BOP)

Be balanced – be healthy – physically, mentally and emotionally – take care of yourself

Be observant – with the whole world around us – intervene with the people we work with – we need to be in control

Be present – be in the moment with the people around you – focus on the need to be here and now

Alex talks about 5 Keys to Leadership:

Hard work is important to success but not the only thing. Empower others

Continue to develop your leadership styles – develop new skill sets – grow with technology

Adapt – listen to your people

The only failure is the failure to act – we can’t be stuck – take action

When you fail to lead, others will lead – they will be successful - very competitive

Alex then talked about the 7 Pillars of Leadership and how they apply in business:

Have vision – establish goals – inspire others

Collaboration – watch the credits at the end of a movie or TV show – thousands of people working together - everyone has a role - partnerships and respect are non-negotiable

Adaptability – be ready to redesign plans – be flexible

Empowerment – let people be their best selves – develop purpose in them

Focus – how to prioritize issues – minimize distractions – don’t get distracted by noise

Resilience – manage stress and adversity – life is hard – find ways to build resilience – develop skill sets to handle diversity

Authenticity – keep it real - be genuine as a person – be honest – build connections

Alex was thanked by Past President Al Finnigan.

Meeting adjourned: shortly after 8 PM.
