SPEAKER Dr. Tess Pearce Our speaker for the evening was member Dr. Tess Pearce, who spoke about “Resilience”. Tess is a retired Ontario Tech professor. She is currently teaching a course at the Oshawa Senior Citizens' Centre and she is a leader for the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI). We can sometimes be overwhelmed by our own and world problems. In the face of all problems, we can call on our resolve, we have resilience. We can live a resilient life - we have the ability to prevent, resist, absorb, adapt and recover positively. The effects of being resilient are reflected in physical health, mental health and in community building. Older adults bounced back better from Covid isolation than younger adults. This is because older adults have learned resilience. How do we build resilience? Rotary, for example, is all about community building. Resilience can be measured and taught. It is built with optimism, It grows with Service above Self. You can improve your resilience by activities that encourage stillness and being in the moment - like meditation and forest walking, or social activities with good friends. Tess encourages us to tell our story. We all have the capability to bounce back! Bob Stewart thanked Tess for her presentation, and told us of his experience with human resilience.
