Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

 

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders. 

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

 

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Pat Dyck is still recovering from the broken leg she suffered in a fall earlier in the summer. Hilda circulated a card so we could let Pat know we are thinking of her.

Rotary Club of Uxbridge is launching a Catch the Ace fundraiser to support their new hospital.

Rotary Club of Bowmanville has Oktoberfest on October 5th and Apple Fest on October 19th.

Lennis circulated a list for volunteers for Hallowe’en at the Kids' Safety Village October 24th, 25th, 26th. He will circulate the list again at the next meeting. There is an organizing committee meeting at the Village at 2 pm on October ??

Next Bingo is Thursday October 17th. Volunteers will be Hilda Finigan, Al FinnIgan, Dave Andrews and Lennis Trotter.

We are back each Saturday at the North Oshawa Farmers market selling composted manure, birdhouses and now tulips bulbs for polio. Al & Hilda Finnigan will be the sellers this week . On October 12th the sellers will be Linda & Craig Porritt. That is the final week of the season.

Dave A reminded everyone of our World Polio Day celebration at Durham College the evening of Oct 18th. If you want to come that evening and have not registered, Dave Andrews can register you online. There will be no club meeting that week on Tuesday October 15th..

On October 16th at 9:30 a.m. there will be a flag raising at Oshawa City Hall to honour World Polio Day.

Hilda reminded members of upcoming District events :

District Conference Oct 25-27 - there is now unbundled pricing if you only want to go for part of the weekend.

We host DG Virginia O’Reilly’s official club visit to the two Oshawa clubs at the Oshawa Golf Club Tuesday Nov 26

Next Board Meeting is October 8th at 4:45 pm.

Reminder:  the Kids Against Hunger date will be Saturday November 2 from 8:30 am to 2 pm at the Jubilee Pavillion. We will need at least 20 Rotarians, spouses and family members from each of the

6 clubs participating.

Ted reminded us to get our order in for tulips. This is a Polio fundraiser $20 for 20 tulip bulbs.

Cakes and Hams - Orders can be taken now. The hams are $30 and the cakes are $25. Deadline for orders is November 12th.

The Foundation Walk is October 6th. Please get in your walk pledges by e-transfer or cheque to Treasurer Linda.

We raised $1305 in donations for the Jasper Wildfire Disaster Relief fund. The Club will top that up to $1500.

Ted reminds us that we can donate to Rotary International in an easy way - by signing up for a recurring donation to be automatically deducted from your account each month,

ACE OF SPADES Robbie Larocque  drew the 6 of spades. The pot grows bigger . It is now over $500

HAPPY BUCKS:

1. Tess P. was happy because it is International Day for Older People. She attended a flag raising at City Hall.

2. Janice C, gave $5. She has a new PSW named “Happy” who is from India and can communicate with Kris in Hindi!

3. Dave A. put $7 in the kitty which was a donation from a winning Bingo player at last Saturday’s Red Barn Bingo!.

4  Peter H.  - just happy to make the pot grow!

5. Robert Kipling gave a Happy Buck for the Oshawa Public Library. They are having a public book sale October 3rd to 5th.

6  Kim T. very happy - she received a certificate from the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre.

7. Ted M. gave $5 - Ted & Sharron and Al & Hilda attended the Million Dollar Quartet at the Whitby Courthouse, a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Whitby. Ted said it was the best live show he’d ever attended.

8.Hilda F. Recently attended the 61st anniversary of her nursing graduating class. Al is not in attendance tonight as he is attending a gender reveal for their 12th grandchild, first on the Finnigan side.

SPEAKER  Steve Barkwell - Fire Chief of the City of Oshawa.

Dave Andrews  introduced our guest speaker, Steve Barkwell - Fire Chief of the City of Oshawa.

Steve reviewed all the areas of responsibility under fire management services:

Within Fire Services there are several divisions including Administration, Fire Prevention, Mechanical Division, Training, Communications, Emergency Management, Facilities and of course Fire Suppression.

Oshawa has taken over dispatch for the entire Durham region. We will have a fully digital 911 system by 2025.

A welcome addition to the City of Oshawa is Virtual Reality Training.
