THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

Hilda – Ploughman’s Choice Sales are going well. We will not be at the North Oshawa Farmer’s market on Aug 26 (we will be at the Autofest). We hope that John Kellam will help out on Aug 19 (Al and Hilda will be away).

Rotary Leadership Institute -“In Person” has been cancelled for the fall of 2023.It will be held on ZOOM. Parts One Two and Three will be held on line. Part One: from 6 to 8 pm on Sept 13, 20 and 27. Part Two from 6 to 8 pm on Oct 11, 18 and 25. Part Three from 6 to 8 pm on November 8, 15, and 22. The Spring 2024 RLI will hopefully be held at Centennial College Event Centre,

ACE OF SPADES:

Bill Creamer (again) won the opportunity to draw the Ace of Spades, but instead drew the King of Hearts .The jackpot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS

Al Finnigan – last week at golf, he had five holes with the score of 4 on each hole. That 5 – 4’s got him $30. Way to go Al.

Bob Koski – his granddaughter , who just turned 16 has her temporary driver’s license – good and bad. AND on the weekend they had a family dinner at Deer Creek. Bob gets 25% off . His daughter works there.

Bill Creamer – had a great family picnic at brother Bill’s cottage and his niece from Calgary was there too.

Hilda thanked Linda and Craig who were at the North Oshawa Farmers market a week ago Saturday filling in for Al and Hilda who were at the Red Barn Bingo. It rained the whole time and it really got cold too, and they sold two bird houses.

Hilda  - happy that her grandson Ryan is now a football coach in Kamloops BC, doing well.

Hilda – Al’ s son Nevin just bought a house in Apsley where they visited this weekend.

Hilda – next week, Al and Hilda are going to Al’s brother’s (Mike’s) place in Lionhead and will visit friends along the way.

Janice – Jan, Kris and Diana went to Lakefield last week. They visited a farmers’ market, and Jan had an old photo of Kris’ dad put on to canvass in Peterborough, and presented it to Kris when they were there.

Dave Penney – went with the Bowmanville Rotary Club on their one day car rally with 18 stops though Peterborough and Lakefield and wound up at Don Gleed’s cottage for a great dinner.

Linda – went to Lindsay today and had lunch with Ethel Gamble (now 95 years old) .

Ted  -  his grandson just turned 19, and is now an auto mechanic apprentice , (after many years of recovering from brain injury) . Very proud of him. 

GUEST SPEAKER:      DR. DAN PERLMAN – VICE PRES – ROTARY ACTION GROUP – ROTARIANS AGAINST MALARIA – GLOBAL (on zoom from Aspen Colorado)

Introduced by Dave Andrews, Dr. Dan Perlman Daniel Perlman completed his trifecta of higher degrees: M.D., M.B.A. and M.P.H. (Masters of Public Health). He practiced infectious diseases and public health in Colorado, holding several positions in healthcare leadership before retiring.  He volunteered in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, at hashaiti.org. He has served on the Board of Directors of several nonprofits and co-founded the Colorado Chapter of the Infectious Diseases of America.  He is an active member of the Aspen Rotary Club, as is his wife Bryna.  He has been involved in developing projects to eliminate malaria. He currently promotes community healthcare worker training in Africa and was named 2022-23 “Rotarian of the Year” by his club. He is currently serving as vice chair of the Rotary Action Group called RAM-Global, that’s Rotarians Against Malaria and he is the lead on a new global grant in Western Kenya. 

Dan gave a brief history of the very first Rotary Program of Scale (against malaria) in Zambia. He was able to partner with Bill Gates ($2 million), World Vision ($2 million) and Rotary Foundation ($2 million) to train 5,000 community health workers in malaria in Zambia.

Dan noted that with polio eradication almost over, Rotary is looking very seriously at the next “big” project which just may be malaria eradication.

We then watched the following inspiring and heart wrenching video from Australian Stephanie Rodriguez that was taken at the Rotary Action Group preconference in Melbourne Australia , this year. Stephanie who contracted malaria on a visit to Africa. 2 weeks later she was n a come in Mass General in Boston , paralized and after 40 surgeries in the next two years (when she lost both feet) , she is now recovering. She joined Rotary in 2005 and realizes that it will be Rotarians who will improve the resources to eradicate malaria.

CIVID set them back, But the conference in Australia got them back on track. She said it is time to come together and “Finish The Fight”. Stephanie is now fencing and hopes to represent Australia on France in 2024 at the paralympics. She noted how much malaria impacts not just her but also her family and friends.

At the RAG conference in Melbourne, Dan announced a new global grant application he is working on with 20 Rotary clubs in Kenya to help eradicate malaria. He is looking for 20 clubs in North America – one from each District to raise $10,000 each. The grant will be for training health workers, equipment, cell phones, bicycles, etc  . Dan will be sending us written confirmation where he stands now and the “ask”. He has 7 clubs in North America so far and need 13 more for the 2o clubs in North America.

Dan noted that the first vaccine was approved last year by World Health and rolled out in a few countries last year.
