THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW_on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave.

2. Dave A. encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

3. MAR  8 – Rotary District 7070 International Women’s Day Celebration – 6 to 9 PM – Rotary Global Classroom Durham College (In person and online) to celebrate fellowship and hear from female leaders of Rotary District 7070.  Reception from 6 to 7 pm. Broadcast starts at 7 pm. Registration fee of $5.00 payable at the door. (Register if you are attending IN PERSON: https://rotary7070.org/event/international-women-s-day-celebration-2023/ )   Parking will be $3.00 Guest speakers include Niecy Dillon, Rachel Boyd, Kaitlyn Almeida and Elizabeth Compton. 4. We have APR 1 and 2 as dates to volunteer at Purple Woods Pancake Breakfast. Volunteers could include spouses , children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors. Robbie is the liason with Purple Woods for the Maple Syrup Festival and Ted is looking after the sign up sheet.  We have 13 each day!  On the day of event, our names and contact info will be required.  Best to arrive at 8:30 for good parking. Event open from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm  (see: https://www.cloca.com/maple-syrup-festival ) Ted Morrison will organize the details of our club’s volunteer efforts in a few weeks.

5.  Rotary Leadership Institute  - PART II is Wednesday evenings in March  8, 15, AND 22 FROM 6 TO 8 PM – Please register TODAY https://rotary7070.org/event/copy-of-district-7070-rli-part-2-oct-12--19--26-2022/ . Dave encouraged members to sign up for a refresher about Rotary. Great for new and seasoned veterans.

6. In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host. There are only 30 spots available!  Online applications and further details will be available on the Rotary District 7070 website and all District social media channels by January 31, 2023. We have selected Morgan Joy and she has applied to be our candidate. Morgan has assisted our club at the Farmers Market, at Kids Against Hunger, and on the Great Lakes Cleanup, just to name a few.  

7. Sue announced Easter celebrations at the Kids Safety Village April 7 & 8 from 10am until 2pm. We need 6 to 8 Rotary Club Volunteers needed from our club each day. Please sign up with Sue MacKinnon. Sue has Police check applications . Please fill out and give to Sue as soon as possible. (Need  a new one every 6 months).

16. APR 22 – EARTH DAY– Great Lakes Water Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Second Marsh with Oshawa and Courtice  Rotary Clubs. Bring your own water (in a reusable bottle) and a picker if you have one. Rotarian and families (sign up sheet will go around). Civic Leaders also invited. Park along Col Sam Drive near Second marsh sign (on south side of road).

GUEST SPEAKER:  Our very own Rotarian Dr. Colin Carrie –  MP for Oshawa

Dave Andrews introduced our speaker club Rotarian and Oshawa MP Colin Carrie for his Annual address to the Club. Colin has been Oshawa’s MP for the last 18 years.

 Colin described his “Coffee with Colin” initiative and how successful it has been. He went on to discuss the many topics that Oshawa and area residents raise.

• The economy is a frequent topic. Interest rates are squeezing hard on family budgets.

• Supply chain issues are causing havoc—think about buying a new vehicle without all the chips.

• Justice issues including violence in Toronto. But violence is in certain areas of Oshawa also. Some individuals should not be on the streets.

• Human trafficking along the 401 still a serious problem. There should be mandatory sentences.

• Election interference and the presence of what are known as Chinese Police Stations.

• Canada seems to be a leader in medical assisted dying—is that good?

• Canada has more resources per person than any other country in the world. Are we developing them properly? The USA is looking to Canada as it narrows the global supply chains it depends on.

• What does the Buy American policy mean to Canada. Per Collin all parties are working that theme. The USA needs our minerals—particularly those it has been accustomed to sourcing from China.

• Canada’s social net is strong. Possibly excessive debt created during COVID.

John Kellam thanked Colin for joining us and his great up-date on the state of the nation.
