THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities
2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings
5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society
6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community
7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians
8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Announcements

Tess: A bottle drive for Oshawa Club is Saturday June 20. 8 am -2 pm. Martin Franzen’s home located at 18 Woodbine Place, Oshawa.

Hilda: Need Bingo help on Saturday (Yvonne stepped up!)  Hilda also updated us on the successful sales numbers. Sold all but 9 bird houses, 360 bags Ploughmen’s, and almost all the maple syrup.

Dave A: Rotary info. meeting tonight for our prospective members immediately following the regular meeting.

Robbie: announced that the Changeover meeting meal is $45/person.

Ted: At the May Paul Harris night, we were unable to honour Peter’s contributions. So tonight we right that omission. (See pics at the end of this bulletin.)

Dave M: Rotarians Helen Walsh (RC Northumberland Sunrise) and Cathy Cavanaugh (RC Wellington) are organizing a group tour to Ireland. The tour dates are May 18-26, 2028. Here is a LINK TO THE TOUR SITE.

• Bev: Her proposal to the Chiefs of Ontario Conference was accepted.
• Dave A: Told the epic tale of Keys and Cars with Tess. Also loved that when presenting the big check to Sunrise Developmental Support the clients came out for the photo shoot.
• Tess: Gave us one week to change our minds about her presidency (LOL)
• Robbie: Reverse Draw meeting a success and happy it is almost Fiesta Week!
• Rahul: Happy to be here.
• Lennis: Proud grandpa moment. Granddaughter playing hockey in Rochester NY.
• Pat D: Happy but also sad. Happy oldest daughter has a new house. Sad it is in Fenlon Falls.
• Hilda: Regaled us with the “Miracle of the Lost Earring”
• Camille: Yea! Mexico won their first game.
• Olaleye: Grandson graduated from McLaughlin HS and very happy to be here.
• Daryl R: Happy to be recently retired after 28 years in DRPS. Happy to be able to keep his connection to our club.
• Orlando: Loves the spirited conversations at our meetings.
• Peter: Happy to be here with friends and glad Ted did not get blown away at the Peony Fest. He will be watching Irina and his middle daughter dancing at Fiesta.
• Sudeep: Proud that Rahul graduated from Western.
• Yvonne: Proud parent of her children who can now cook!!
• Dave P: delighted to be having dinner with Al (who was only rude 1x!).
• Al: Got away with doing some weeding while Hilda was away.
• Dale D: Happy Mandy gave him a blanket for his cold legs and happy his friend Martin Franzen is presenting his Partners Protecting Seniors in Ajax.
• Ted: Shoulder doc gave him all clear but now says the other shoulder needs surgery.
• Dave M: Happy to be here.
• Shashi: Happy to introduce Daryl to her Rotary family.

ROTARY MOMENT FOR JUNE 16, 2026  - 10 MYTHS ABOUT ROTARY - BY PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR TED MORRISON

In a survey conducted by Rotary International these 10 myths were repeated over and over. While a few may seem to reflect our club, most do not. We are a cheerful, diverse, and friendly bunch! 
 

1. Rotary is a secret society with an official creed
2. Rotary is exclusively male
3. You have to be old to join (ROMEOS Rotary Old Men, Eating Only)
4. You have to own a business
5. Rotary is boring
6. You have to be rich
7. Rotarians are not friendly
8. Rotarians need to be good Public Speakers
9. Rotary is about business
10. Rotary is a small local group.

This club is part of a global network of friendly dedicated members, who have fun, laugh, share expertise, all in the name of service and community-building. This meeting alone shredded these myths

Welcome Ian MacMillan, Communication Specialist, Community Care Durham

Dave A. introduced Ian. In his role as Communication Specialist, Ian keeps community, staff, and volunteers informed about what’s going on. Ian was News Editor for Metroland before joining Community Care. Ian and his family live in Oshawa

"We seem to be talking a lot about of time these days talking about healthcare in Ontario but a shocking amount of what keeps people healthy has nothing to do with hospitals.”

What a way to start a presentation!

Ian gave a detailed overview of how Community Care Durham (CCD) serves our community. Their mission is to support people and strengthen community, and they have been doing this for nearly 50 years. They are funded by the Ministry of Health, donations, grants, and client fees. They are also supported by a large team of volunteers who dedicate their time to being part of CCD.

Some services CCD offers include Meals on Wheels (both hot & frozen meals), Community Food Boxes, a mobile Food Market that provides fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers, and a new service, Meal prep kits, that include all the ingredients and the recipes to prepare them. In addition, CCD provides no cost WeConnect mental health programs, mental health support groups, social wellness groups, and mental health workshops, there are also exercise and fall prevention classes, foot care, and a community care resource nurse. If that isn’t impressive enough, CCD offers transportation services, an Adult Day Care Program and PSWs who help in client’s homes. The partnership with Rotary is important and together we strengthen communities ‘in kitchens, in cars, in homes, in conversations, and in the lives of people.
