We were all treated like family. People saw his name badge and said “Hi Ted” wherever he went. He enjoyed meeting Rotarians from all over the world and very please to be able to talk with RI Polio Chair Mike McGovern, Pakistan Polio Chair Aziz Memon, and Valarie and Mark Wafer. Valarie is the Grants Chair of the PolioPlus Fund this year. Large distances to walk, even in the same building. He attended two of the major lunches (The Presidential Lunch and the Presidents-Elect Lunch) attended by 2,000 people. He was very proud, at the Presidents Elect lunch, when he talked to the Presidents Elect about our many fundraising, club events and community service projects that we do in our club. They were impressed. Ted was very please when it was announced that the goal of reaching $2.025 billion in the Rotary Foundation endowment Fund has been reached by the end of June 2025. This will assist in keeping the Rotary Foundation going in perpetuity. He was also please that Bill Gates announced that he is continuing with his one -for-two matching to the Foundation’s Polio Fund, up to $100 million donation per year, all the way up to and including 2029, which we hope is when we will be able to call the world polio free. Ted also was very impressed with the promotion of next year’s Rotary International Convention in Taipei Taiwan and encourage us to consider attending.( see: https://www.rotarytaipei2026.org/en/welcome ) Following that, the Convention will be in Dubai in 2027. Robbie – Robbie noted that he is very impressed with all the good work we do as, one Rotary Club. What he saw at the convention being done by thousands of clubs. Over 17,000 attendees to the Convention. He had on his hiking boots and thought public transit was great. He was very impressed with all of the clubs, fellowships, and Rotary Action Groups in the House of Friendship. He was most interested to learn about waterless toilets. He found out that the International Fellowship of Beer Drinkers with proceeds from their events going to WASHRAG (Water and Sanitation Hygiene Rotary Action Group), who in turn help build toiltets (see: https://rotarybrew.org/docs/brew-donates-to-wasrag.docx) . Robbie , by way of Terri Lynn , got an app on their phone for all of the events of the convention. Those events included 60 breakouts over 3 days. Many of those breakouts have powerpoint presentations that are available to us. Robbie will be giving the Directots a look at the 60 breakouts and they can decide which presentations that may benefit our club. Part of their convention was their tour of Canada. They started off in Vancouver and took the Rocky Mountaineer to Calgary before the convention and also went on a tour to Drumheller to see the Dinosaurs. Calgary is a great place to enjoy . Linda - After an early morning flight to Calgary , they had a nap. On the flight, Linda met a Rotarian from St Lucia , a District Governor Elect. Their club does all of their work on the island only because of all of the tremendous need. Linda pointed out to her many other projects and directed her to the House of Freindship. They had dinner in the Calgary Tower and also attend , at the convention a malaria breakout session. She was impressed to see how excited Rotarians get all 17,000 of them at the Convention. They also enjoyed an Irish Pub, and then Home Hospitality at the Cottonwood Country Club south of Calgary. The host club had $5 million in the bank, and have a golf tournament that raises $500,000, and still do lots of projects. The host club put on a western BBQ with lots of western entertainment and even line dancing. At the Home Hospitality event, she met a women from Arizona who asked Linda lots of questions about how we Canadians work with and honour our indigenous peoples. The lady was of indigenous heritage in Arizona, a state that does little for the indigenous. She even found and won $500 at the cowboy casino. Way to go Linda. David – Dave and Jan attended the all-day Global Malaria Eradication Congress 2025, before the convention started, with 10 to 15 speakers. Dave was very impressed with the House of Friendship and all of the exhibitors. . He met a Rotarian from Kenya who knew of the WAKAM project in which we are the lead club in Canada, who has a daughter going to Magill University in Montreal and asked Dave if he could help get her accommodation. Dave noted that Rotary is very big in a small world. He was impressed with the speakers in the main daily sessions, many of whom worked their way up the Rotary ladder being exchange students and scholars before becoming Rotarians. Dave said the convention was fun, educational and concluded that it is good to be a Rotarian.
