THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Linda - Our Sept 6 Board of Directors Meeting will start at 5:30 pm and will be at Linda Porritt’s office  - Centruy 21 Infinity Realty, 650 King St E, Unit 211.

Al  - during our cheque presentation to Durham Youth Services, Shannon mentioned that the money will be used right away on 4 beds for those youth coming in to the shelter. Perfect timing.

There will be a Corn Roast at the North Oshawa Farmers market on Sept 9 from 11 am to 1 pm. Come on out everyone. Proceeds go to Simcoe Hall’s Food Bank.

Rotary Leadership Institute -“In Person” has been cancelled for the fall of 2023.It will be held on ZOOM. Parts One Two and Three will be held on line. Part One: from 6 to 8 pm on Sept 13, 20 and 27. Part Two from 6 to 8 pm on Oct 11, 18 and 25. Part Three from 6 to 8 pm on November 8, 15, and 22. The Spring 2024 RLI will hopefully be held at Centennial College Event Centre,

REMINDER:  On Sept 11, we will have tulip bulbs for sale. Same as last year. Boxes will cost $20 each and available from Hilda and Al and will be for sale throughout the fall at the North Oshawa Farmers Market. Please start preselling to your friends today. Proceeds will go to END POLIO NOW.

November 27 - District Governor John Burns Official Visit to the 2 Rotary Clubs in Oshawa – 11:45 am to 1:30 pm, Wendel Clark’s Restaurant, 67 Simcoe St N, Oshawa, ON L1G 4S3. A luncheon meeting. Joint meeting of the two Rotary Clubs here in Oshawa. Our Nov 28 meeting is cancelled.

ACE OF SPADES:  Dave Andrews won the opportunity to draw the Ace of Spades, but instead drew the 7 of Hearts. The jackpot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS

Sue just returned from Vancouver visiting her son and his family. She went to pour milk on her grandchild's cereal and the fridge was filled with many different kinds of milk.She just chose one and it turned out to be cream-ugh!

Bill Creamer visited his daughter at their cottage on the weekend and enjoyed a trip to the very popular Kinmount Fair. Lots of people.

Robbie told of his trip to his cottage and being stopped by the police because his car was licensed to an unregistered driver. Turns out he did not renew his driver’s license after his birthday --neither did his wife. He got away with a warning.

Dave was happy to accompany Al to the Durham College Centre for Skills Training & Technology to present a cheque from the club on the occasion of the opening of the new EV program.

Lennis is taking his family to Frankenmuth Michigan this weekend. John Kellam is going as well. (must be old cars involved here)

Hilda was happy to see her grandson today. They were helping Al do some renovations

GUEST SPEAKER:      STEVE BARKWELL – CHIEF – OSHAWA FIRE SERVICES

Steve Barkwell was introduced by Dave Andrews.

Fire Chief Steve Barkwell began his career with Oshawa Fire Services in 1999.

His current responsibilities includes oversight over Oshawa Fire Services six divisions, Administration, Communications, Prevention, Suppression, Training, Mechanical in addition to Emergency Management where he serves as the Community Emergency Management Coordinator.

Steve’s past roles include firefighter, Relief Dispatcher, Shift Training Instructor, qualified Training Officer, Acting Captain and Deputy Fire Chief.

Through his many experiences and training, Steve has a wealth of knowledge in health and safety, financial stewardship, training, human rights, labour relations and legislation.

Additionally, he is an active member of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs Urban Advisory Committee, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs Data Committee and the Science & Technology Committee.  Emergency responders face many challenges during their regular duties, including physical and mental health.

Chief Barkwell collaborates with the City of Oshawa’s Innovation & Transformation Branch, Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University on various Teaching City Oshawa projects supporting research and technology development in areas of firefighter navigation and mapping in buildings, firefighter virtual training, and the study of physiological effects of firefighters while completing firefighter tasks in training.

Steve gave an overview of the Oshawa Fire department operations. Of the 232 staff, there are 189 firefighters. . They are growing with the city.

They are averaging 6,000 calls per year ,the vast majority of those are medical related.

The three most common cause of fires in residences are electrical, cooking, and open flame/smoking One of the new challenges that will increase in the future is fire in EV cars. The batteries fires are very difficult to put out. They burn for weeks. then there is the eco damage

During questions Lennis asked the Chief why the Fire departments are not making full use of the new classroom at the Kids Safety Village. He did not know why but he will ask.
