OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF OSHAWA-PARKWOOD

Mailing Address: 96 KING ST. E., OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA L1H 1B6

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Club President Sue MacKinnon at 905-391-1501 or our Club Past President Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963.

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

2020-21 ROTARY THEME: “ROTARY OPENS OPPORTUNITIES”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT:  Holger Knaack – Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany

R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR:         Mark Chipman - Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise in Whitby, Ontario, Canada

ASSISTANT DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: John Burns – Rotary Club of Bowmanville in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Exceptional times call for exceptional actions. COVID-19 has forced us to move our regular RLI programming to a virtual format this year. We are excited to bring you the high quality program directly to the comfort of your home. The benefit is we do not have to worry about traffic or snow!  So, what should you consider attending another virtual meeting?  Rotary provides an opportunity for all of us to provide service to our community and around the world. The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) has a mission to strengthen Rotary clubs through quality leadership education. As Rotarians, you are already a leader in your community and in your profession. The purpose of RLI is to give you the skills and competencies to be an effective leader in Rotary.  Rotarians new to Rotary and even those with many years of service will benefit from learning how we can create strong clubs with vibrant members who are engaged and committed to Service Above Self.  Now more than ever, the world needs Rotarians to create a more peaceful and equitable world for all.

How fortunate we are to have talk to our Rotary Club. We were the fifth country that he talked to on Tuesday night. Todd asked everyone to be present on the call, be open to what would be said and be willing to own your own story and truth, and to tie it all together.

He noted that Diversity is both visible and invisible in actions and in ideas. He said that inclusion was respect for ALL differences and urged us all to create a space where people are seen and heard.

He talked about women in Rotary as an example, how we are moving the need, finally. The Rotary Board of Directors have established a goal that by 2023, more than 30% of the leadership roles in Rotary will be women. Today that figure stand at 24%. Today 27% of the club presidents are women, 24% of the District Governors are women, 23% of the Rotary Regional Leaders are women and 35% of the Rotary International Board of Directors are women.

He said inclusion starts with “I” … that is you and I.

Mindsets are hard to change. We must be open minded .

Ask yourself: What will be my inclusion resume?

He said that as Rotarians, we do more for people we do not know than those in our own backyard.

He said: “Motivate the Middle”. That will drive our organization and our own Rotary Club.

Todd was thanked by Dave Andrews

THE NEXT TUESDAY TALKS: NOVEMBER 10, 2020 AT 7 PM:

Bob Wallace, District 7070 Chair of the Rotary Foundation Committee, and past District Governor and Rotary Zone Coordinator, invited everyone to the November 10 Tuesday Talks on the Rotary Foundation, Brenda Cressy, a trustee of The Rotary Foundation, will be speaking on what she does and a trustee and more information on the workings of The Rotary Foundation.

DECEMBER 15, 2020 ZOOM MEETING  - GAMES NIGHT AT OSHAWA-PARKWOOD:

Ana Rejab is setting up for us a games night. Here’s Ana to tell us how it will work:

Hello fellow Rotarians! Do you remember playing the "Alphabet Game" on long road trips? Do you remember playing "Guess Who?" So many of you have worked so hard because Rotarians are do-ers! Shall we have a night to have fun over zoom while also contributing a small amount to our chapter? $5 to join,(you can etransfer that to treasurer Bill.) winner takes 3/5 of the pot.

Let's start the night with "Guess Who?". I will assign a famous person to each person joining via direct email. On that night, we will take turns to be in the spotlight. Each participant can ask one question to the one in the hot seat. The one in the spotlight will only answer "Yes" or "No". After all of us have had our turn in the spotlight, we write down our answers and reveal at the same time.

The top 5 will proceed to the next level - the "Alphabet Game". Highest scorer(s) will go first.  I will name the latter and category. Each contestant will name something in that category that starts with the said letter, 10 seconds per contestant. We will carry on until all but one is eliminated.

Spouses are certainly invited. If you want them to be part of the game, then they will have to put $5 into the pot too.
