Sue reminded us of theKids Safety Village Annual dinner meeting at our Rotary Club on April 11 when the police will be speaking about events at the safety village. Spouses are invited. Please let Sue know as soon as possible if you can attend. The meal choice will be a chicken fettucini or a vegetarian meal.
Ted indicated he was a getting nervous about the lack of silent auction items received so far. THERE IS ONLY ONE MONTH LEFT. Get you items to Ted and Dave if even by email so we know how many we have and can start processing them for the auction.
LInda announced that we will have our Club Membership Committee meeting ON APRIL 18 at 8 pm.
Sue also announced that the Next Board meeting will be on April 12 by Zoom at 7 PM so Robbie can participate
Dave also encouraged members to attend the upcoming District Assembly on May 6 at Centennial College Event Centre. You must register online on the district website at : https://rotary7070.org/event/district-assembly/ ). Details will be available soon. The club will pay the registration fee ($50 per person) . We encourage the 2023-24 Board of Directors and every member to sign up.
Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave. Over 90 tickets out so far. Dave A. encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Take a photo of the item, get a retail value and send to Dave A so he can add to the website and social media. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.
APR 21 – Waverly Public School Play Day – New Playground equipment will officially open. Larry Hurren is working with Sherri Parr to determine go over the details of the Grand Opening of the playground equipment.

In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. We have selected Morgan Joy and she has applied to be our candidate. Morgan has assisted our club at the Farmers Market, at Kids Against Hunger, and on the Great Lakes Cleanup, just to name a few. Still some spots available. If you know of another candidate, there is a form to fill out (see the District 7070 March Newsletter for details).

Dave passed around the sign up sheet for members, their guests and family to sign up for the APR 22 – EARTH DAY– Great Lakes Water Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Second Marsh with Oshawa and Courtice Rotary Clubs. Please let Dave know as soon as possible if you are attending. If you want a Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup T Shirt, the cost is $15 each. Order must be placed with Dave by March 31. The T shirt you got last year is also great to wear on this day. Bring your own water (in a reusable bottle) and a picker if you have one. Wear boots. Saturday and Sunday. There were 900 people buying pancakes over the weekend. GUEST SPEAKER: Dan Ruby Manager Business Development, at Invest Durham. Introduced by Dave A., Dan joined Invest Durham in September 2022 and brings a wealth of Economic Development experience to his new role. He most recently held the title of Sector Manager; Automotive and Mobility Innovation, at the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). There, he delivered over $30M in funding for Smart Mobility, C/AV, and EV projects. Prior roles include Economic Development Manager with the City of Vaughan, Small Business Consultant for the York Region SBEC (Small Business Enterprise Centre), and Program Director with the Nottawasaga CFDC (Community Futures Development Corp.). Dan is incredibly well respected throughout Durham Region’s business, public, and academic sectors, as well as within the Province of Ontario. He is known for building strong, long-lasting relationships, including in senior levels of government with such groups as the foreign trade commissioner service and Ontario’s Trade and Investment Office. Dan has nearly 20 years of experience generating both international and domestic leads and advancing them through a sales funnel. He successfully delivered major funding projects for the Province’s ‘TargetGHG’ clean tech program, and has built a considerable professional network among Ontario’s automotive and ICT (Info and Communications Technology) sectors. Dan has an Honours Bachelor of Science from U of T and has founded 4 companies and one not for profit. In his spare time, he volunteers on several Advisory Committees and boards, and has coached minor hockey for 12 years. Dan recounted several reasons why Durham Region is positioned well to attract new big business to come to this area. He also talked about Durham as a growing business Centre with the numerous and diverse industries already here: (see: https://www.durham.ca/en/economic-development/industries/industries.aspx?_mid_=34347 ) He talked about the tremendous growth in Durham as well and that Durham Region's land, location, people, infrastructure and quality of life options make the region a clear choice for investment. He added that Durham Region is committed to assisting the growth of small businesses and encouraging entrepreneurship with many resources. He introduced a new program called DRIVE, focusing on the energy, automotive, and hi tech industries already here who will partner to attract foreign investment. He explained that his team helps business navigate city hall and he promotes new business in Durham. This was a very interesting talk .
