ROTARY MOMENT
David Andrews chose “the changes we should know about for the upcoming Rotary year” as his topic for this week’s meeting. He encouraged us to look on www.rotary.org to find biographical information about the RI President Sakuji Tanaka, of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Japan and our own Wilf Wilkinson of the Rotary Club of Trenton who will take over as Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair.  Changes include regional membership plans which address the region’s unique needs, a pilot project involving the Foundation and the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group, redesigning the End Polio Now website, new members to the RI Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees.  Keep your eye on the Rotarian magazine and the rotary.org website to learn more about these and other changes that will affect the future of  Rotary.

GUEST SPEAKER
Our guest speaker, District Governor Ted Koziel was introduced by Assistant Governor Wayne Routley.  Ted spoke to us about his own introduction to Rotary and what Rotary has meant to him.  He encouraged us to be open to change and to “think outside the box” in order to support membership in a changing world.  He suggests that we increase humanitarian service(suggests a meeting out in the community) and increase the public image of Rotary (showed slide of his business vehicle with Rotary symbols, end polio now logos, etc.).  DG Ted specified some important dates in this 2012-2013 Rotary Year, such as:  celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Ontario with the Toronto Club, RI President Tanaka will be coming to Toronto in February to be a part of this celebration; Club Runner is being updated to better meet our needs; the Foundation Walk will be in Bowmanville on Sunday September 23rd; regional walks will begin next year (several clubs will band together to sponsor this annual walk); Rotary Leadership Institute, a three part program will continue; Rotary International Conference will be in Lisbon, Portugal in June 2013; World Peace Day is on February 25th, 2013; Rotary Ribfests needing volunteers and of course, “The Kaleidoscope of Rotary” our District Conference in October 2012.   President Tanaka’s motto “Peace Through Service” refers not only to peace in the world, but to peace in homes and communities in our own cities and districts. In closing DG Ted reminded us that lives are changed by many things that Rotary supports such as, clean water, polio eradication, educational opportunities for all.  ROTARY AFFORDS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE TO DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS – Service Above Self.

President Jodi Hewett thanked District Governor Ted for visiting our club and bringing his message of enthusiasm for 2012/13.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
