GUEST SPEAKER:  John Henry, Chair, Durham Region

Introduced by Dave Andrews,  John Henry began by saying how comfortable he felt here at our club he knows almost everyone in the room_He remarked that 2022 was a challenging year because of COVID and the vaccination program. Durham has been recognized for its 311 service number that allows a resident to get help from a variety of services. It eliminates 6 numbers. Dial 311 for one stop shop.
Oshawa has been recognized as one of the top seven intelligent cities in the world. He is proud of the way we manages the taxes to keep our AAA credit rating.. He is also proud that Durham  is  the fastest growing regions in Ontario. He believes we will double our population by 2050. He said Durham is the energy capital of Canada He believes Durham will be the energy capital of the world with the work that OPG is doing right now.

He says there are several challenges facing us—homelessness, opioids, addictions which he finds frustrating He told about supportive housing project already in the works. There are 10 houses in Oshawa  and a 47 bed supportive home in Beaverton (17 bed for development handicapped adults).

Durham Region is making great strides to improve Transit with the entire fleet being net zero emissions  in 10 years. Every person in Durham will have access to transit in Durham The GO expansion to Bowmanville will be announced at the end of March.

The future is very bright in Durham—a new hospital, growth all over Durham not only in Oshawa bringing jobs. Our unemployment rate is at 4% lower than the rest of Ontario

Durham Regional Chair (and fellow Rotarian) John Henry, was the keynote speaker at the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood on January 31, 2023 at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club. He talked about the tremendous growth that we continue to experience here in Durham Region and of the challenges faced by the Region. While at the meeting , John bought the first ticket for the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Reverse Draw, Dinner and Silent Auction that will be held on May 11, 2023 at the Courtyard by Marriott from Lennis Trotter , Past President of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood.
