GUEST SPEAKER:      SHANNON JACKSON  –  EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DURHAM YOUTH SERVICES

Introduced by Dave Andrews, Shannon started per presentation by thanking Rotary and our club for our work in the community.  Her son gained his sense of safety from the Kids Safety Village.

Durham Youth Services assist youth with homelessness.  In 2008, local lawyer, Joanne Dutka recognized need for emergency shelter and Joanne’s Youth Emergency Shelter was started, now Durham Youth Services.

Three areas of focus define Durham Youth Services:  Prevention is ideal, to reconnect family, for the family to be together; support is available for youth and parents.  Rapid Housing, emergency shelter at Joanne’s; you deserve this over a shelter.  Stabilization - Durham Youth Services have a short term grant to assist with mental health wellness. The goal is to finally be in a home and finish school. Wait lists at some facilities is several years.  Transitional Housing is an option for some and Toronto Condo Staging & Design are amazing to provide assistance with furnishings.

7 clients possess a drug dependency as well as suffering from mental illness.  There is no time limit to assisting that is available

Any Questions: how many staff?   24.   Some clients show the empathy, passion and drive to be future employees of Durham Youth Services.  When credentials are obtained, employment is considered.  It is difficult to determine how many homeless there are in our city but 284 shelters are available.
