GUEST SPEAKER:      JAMES MELCOHE – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR  - COMMUNITY CARE DURHAM

Introduced by Dave Andrews, James has 20 years experience in Ontario’s health care system.  The last 4 years as CEO of Community Care Durham.

James Presentation:

Community Care Durham is a non-profit, register charity.  Most know Community Care Durham for Meals on Meals!    People reply on services, Community Care operates similar to a business as accountability is essential, assisting 9,000 clients with their independence, aging from 16 to 106!  Staff is 340.  Community Care Durham assist in supporting independence to those wanting to remain in their own home, where they want to be.

90% funded from Ministry of Health, fundraising is necessary.

Durham Region is growing fast but facilities are not. Government is not investing in keeping people at home and Community Care to those at home is essential.  6,500 persons in Oshawa are Living alone.  Social connections fall apart, loneliness sets in and even mental health deteriorates.

Meals on Wheels is also a well being check.  The Fresh Food Box (different from Feed the Need) includes fresh produce is also available weekly.  Frozen meals are also distributed to those in need.

Adult Day programs are well received.  Supervised full day programs so care givers get a break are at OSCC.  Respite care helps with those at home, any day of the week for 1 hour,

Accessible Vans transport those with mobility issues and Assisted living/Supportive Housing assists high risk seniors residing at home. Exercise and Fall Prevention is available to older adults. Foot Care Clinics are also available. Health Community Care Durham is so much more than Meals on Wheels!
