SPEAKER:  TODD ROLLAUER CHIEF, DURHAM REGIONAL POLICE SERVICE

Past President David Andrews introduced Police Chief Todd Rollauer. Chief Rollauer is retiring effective March 31st, 2023 so this will be his last presentation to us as Chief. 35 Years of Service.

Chief Rollauer presented the current trends and opportunities in Durham policing

  • Body Worn Cameras - Three year phase-in started in 2021. The challenge is the staffing to collect and store the data.

  • Courtice Court Fire - The facility was destroyed by fire in July 2022. A lot of evidence was lost. Divisions who had been working from the location were displaced. A new facility is under construction in Clarington to be completed 2024/25.

  • Snapshot: Violent Crime - Robbery is down, but Assault Level One is up. The data will be released to the public for information. The data helps with planning and decision making

  • Crisis Call Diversion Unit - Mental health and addictions workers are being integrated into the call centers to assist with call direction. DRPS has 5 nurses who travel with officers. These nurses have been called to help with staff shortages but are currently back working with the Police Services.

  • Cyber Crime Unit - Deals with sophisticated criminal activity. Officers with advanced training in identifying and recognizing such crimes (crypto, etc.)

  • DRPS Strategic Plan - Are conducting a Community Survey and will hold public town hall meetings. Welcoming community input   www.drps.ca/survey

  • Citizens’ Academies - Has been running a number of weeks. Participants learn about policing and the justice system.

  • Police Appreciation Dinner & Awards Night (PADAN) - Had been on hold for two years. Raises money for community programs. Awards were given to officers to recognize extraordinary service.

Members had a number of questions for the Chief.

Past District Governor Ted Morrison thanked Chief Rollauer.

Past-President Dave closed the meeting at 8.16 pm.

Meeting finished at 8:16 PM
