GUEST SPEAKER:

Sue MacKinnon introduced our Guest Speaker Fred Mandryk , Past President of the Bowmanville Rotary Club, to speak to us about Kids Against Hunger.

Fred first got involved with Kids Against Hunger in 2012 when he was immediate Past President of the Bowmanville Club.

He organized an event during Apple Fest where 200 people packed 17,000 meals in 3 hours. The Bowmanville Club became a satellite for Kids Against Hunger, paid out $8,000 for the equipment. Now a number of District 7070 and 7010 clubs are doing it. Over 6 years raising $925,000 and packaging 950,000 meals.

Fred showed (with help from Carolina) a documentary on the programme “Full of Heart” by Ryan Coleman, which explained the food packaging process for Kids Against Hunger. Here is a link to the video: https://vimeo.com/178629276.

Peterborough Rotary Club has a goal to package 1,000,000 meals (over 5 years) . They have a website and are hoping to reach their goal over 5 years. You can go to onemillionmealsPeterborough.com and find FAQs about the Kids Against Hunger program.

The meals that are packaged can be designated – there are over 40 countries that receive the packaged rice meals. However, you can also direct them to local food banks, or First Nations Communities, You can direct part of the packages your club prepares to multiples places.

Between two Rotary clubs, the cost is $5,000 and this will allow for 14,726 meals to be packaged. Whitby-Sunrise is on board with Oshawa-Parkwood in this project. All the clubs need is to have the funds, the location and the date, and to get 36 volunteers for 3 hours on the packaging date.

Dave Penney gave thanks to Fred for the presentation. President Ted Morrison believes we should target a date in May to have a day of hands on work for Kids Against Hunger. Possibly we could add Oshawa Rotary Club and make even more meal packages.
