SPEAKER:

Trish Best President of the Rotary Club of Oshawa was introduced by President Sue.  Trish’s current position is Manager of Prosecutors for Durham Region.  During her career in the Court System she has served in the Office of the Attorney General and as a Prosecutor.

Trish chose to talk with us about current issues such as Speed Cameras in Community Safety Zones, Red Light Cameras and use of Cell Phones while driving. Her words of caution noted facts such as: in the case of speeding in a Community Safety Zone and Red Light Camera -  the ticket is  issued to the owner of the vehicle, the fine is very high, however these fines do not go on your record, no demerit points. These fines are automatic and will not be reduced.

Choosing to go to trial will result in an increase in the amount of the fine.

She recommends putting Cell phones “out of reach” while driving.  If you must talk on the phone, pull off the road in a safe place. If using your phone as a GPS be sure it is securely mounted where it can be easily seen while driving.. Fines for using a cell phone while driving (or stopped at an intersection) can result in demerit points, license suspension and high fines.

As for fines for going through a Red Light the picture tells all. Trish added a word of caution in regard to STOP signs, saying one must come to a full stop, then look around, looking around as we approach the Stop sign will most likely result in not coming to a full stop and perhaps cause one to misjudge a situation.

A question was asked re the use of monies collected in fines – this is split between the City, the Region or Municipality, etc. Trish is researching Lennis’ question re Historical Plates.

Pres. Sue and those present thanked Trish for sharing this timely information with us.
