ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

  • President Dave: THANK YOU FOR ZOOM:  To our very own Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian Eric Guernsey for arranging the Zoom Meeting sharing with Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority, The Durham Workforce Authority is the acknowledged provider of local workforce information and champion of workforce development initiatives unique to Durham Region. We look forward to all of our Zoom meetings and thank you both, for all of your help. See below for a schedule of meeting start times and locations for February 2022.

  • President Dave: District 7070 has sent an email from DG Ron Dick asking for volunteers for the July 5 Jennifer Jones Day for a number of committees. (sent to all club members). One of the committees that we can volunteer for is for one of the planned events  - a Kids Against Hunger food packing. Dave asked anyone who wanted to volunteer to do so immediately since the date for volunteering is Feb 1. Perhaps our club could put together a table.

  • President Dave : District Governor Ron Dick is also looking for participants for the 2022 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium, May 26-29, 2022 taking place at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest Centre, Open to young people ages 17 - 33. This Symposium replaces the previous programme RYLA. The registration fee is $299. If we sponsor a participant our Club would pay the fee. Past-President Sue MacKinnon will follow up.

  • President Dave : Next Bingo is February 5th, Matinee, Team 3 (Sandy McDowell’s team).

  • President Dave  FEB 23 – 8 PM - VIRTUAL GALA AND FUNDRAISER FOR THE ROTARY FOUNDATION - Join our hosts, Rotary International Vice President Valarie Wafer, and Rotary Foundation Trustee, Dean Rohrs, for our Fundraising Gala. Special guests include RI President-Elect Jennifer Jones, Director-Elect Drew Kessler, and our MC for the evening, Past-Director Jeffry Cadorette. This 90-minute, fast-paced event celebrates the work of Rotarians to support and raise funds for The Rotary Foundation. Tickets to the virtual event are available by clicking this link Buy Gala Admission Tickets. Tickets are $125 USD. Each Gala ticket includes a contribution of $100 USD to The Rotary Foundation, allocated 75% to the Annual Fund and 25% to PolioPlus. Your gift will be a fully credited donation to TRF - and you will receive a charitable tax receipt, and related Paul Harris Fellowship points. Plus, each donation is credited towards your District's Foundation Goals. President Dave has registered and several other Club members indicated that they have also registered.

  • President Dave – District 7070 Annual Conference is being held May 13-15 at the Courtyard Marriott in Oshawa. Please get this on your calendars. It’s a bonus to have the Conference in our city. DG Ron is counting on a good attendance by the Durham Clubs. Many in attendance indicated that they have already registered. Past-President Hilda Finnigan is Volunteer Director for the Conference, and she is hoping to sign up many from the Club to volunteer.

  • President Dave: Our soil amendment (a.k.a. manure) project will be up and running before you know it. We will be selling Ploughman’s Choice again in the Spring of 2022. Start lining up your customers. Past-President Hilda Finnigan indicated we have to put in a new application for the farmer’s market, with payment for the booth due in May.

  • President Dave: Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Reverse Draw Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on June 2nd. Bill Creamer has put in the license application and tickets will go on sale as soon as we get the License. We are starting to promote this on Social Media - we need you to mention it to your friends and others who are prospects.

  • President Dave: The Classic Car Raffle is being investigated and costs being evaluated by Past-President Lennis Trotter and John Kellam. More details to come soon.

  • PDG Ted Morrison:  The Annual Rotary Foundation Walk is being held Sept. 25/22 at the Heber Down/Cullen Park Trail in Whitby. Every Club has a job. PDG Ted has volunteered our club for Registration as he has great confidence in Past-President Hilda Finnigan’s skills in this area.

  • PDG Ted Morrison: Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise is selling Maple Syrup for $20/bottle. Orders can be sent to srutledge@bell.net They are hoping to sell 500 bottles. PDG Ted encourages us to buy some so that we can build goodwill in their membership for the Reverse Draw and various other fundraisers. Bob & Rhonda Stewart already have their order in!

  • Past-President Dave Andrews: – We still need help getting speakers for the next few months. We can still get speakers on Zoom from anywhere in the world and project them at the Golf Club after Feb 22.  Be sure to read the first page of the Weekly Calendar of Events for all the details you need to get speakers. Please keep in mind that we are experiencing smaller numbers in the audience.

A discussion ensued, led by Past-President Dave Andrews and President-Elect Robbie Larocque regarding the prospect of remote speakers and/or hybrid meetings. The decision was that Dave and Robbie should meet with their laptops at the Golf Club and test the technology.

  • President Elect Robblie Larocque: In response to a question by Dr. Larry Hurren. Robbie informed us that the City of Oshawa has decided not to hold a 2022 Maple Syrup/Pancake Festival at Purple Woods Conservation Area.

  • President Dave: The next Club Board of Directors’ meeting is on Feb 2 at the the home of Dave Penney
