SPEAKER: LINDA LOWERY - HEADS UP DURHAM

David Andrews introduced Linda Lowery, Founder and director of Heads Up Durham along with her “AV man” and husband and also cofounder of Heads UP Durham ,Ted Dionne.

Linda explained that the organization she and Ted founded Is to create awareness, educate, and hopefully  prevent Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). She showed statistics that demonstrated that TBI is a silent epidemic. There are way more cases than the average person is aware of.

She outlined all the causes of TBI with car crashes heading the list.50% of homeless men have had TBI before they were homeless. 40% of female prisoner entered jail having BTI.

The cost of treating BTI is staggering . To treat a mild case is $85,000. To treat a moderate case is $94,000 and to treat a serious case is $3million.

She described the PARTY program that she first saw at Sick Kids hospital and she brought the program to Durham. PARTY stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth.

Life is full of choices…chose well!!

This was a very informative and inspiring talk.

Their Vision:

Durham Region: a community where traumatic brain injury awareness, prevention and support is evident in all aspects of our lives as we learn, work and play.

Their Mission:

To weave traumatic brain injury awareness, prevention, policy and support into the fiber of Durham Region through community action.

Their Goals:

To create an increased awareness of traumatic brain injury, and its widespread cause and effects, by disseminating information to all citizens in Durham Region society through a multitude of channels.

To promote the prevention of brain injury in all areas of society through enhanced communication, education, policy and enforcement.

To enhance the support provided to Durham Region citizens who have experienced a TBI and/or their caregivers.

We encourage everyone to support this worthy cause. Please donate today . All funds directed to Heads Up! Durham are managed by The Brain Injury Association of Durham Region (BIAD) as a welcome in-kind donation.
