Land Acknowledgement:

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

Moment of Silence: President David Penney asked all of us to stand for a Moment of Silence for the people of Ukraine.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

  • President Dave: From District Governor Ron Dick   -Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium: Search out a Youth in Your Community and invite them. Rotary District 7070 is excited to announce the 2022 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium, May 26-29, 2022 taking place at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest Centre, an environmentally sensitive, overnight outdoor education facility located in the heart of the majestic Ganaraska Forest just north of Port Hope! The 3 night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Indigenous Culture, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Toastmasters/Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with camp fires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!!  All this for only $299 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals.  Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host.  There are only 30 spots available so act fast!  March 20 is the registration Deadline.   • President Dave: Board meeting March 2  will  be at Larry Hurren’s home at 7 PM. Robbie has also set up a Zoom link.

  • President Dave: Next Bingo is Evening March 5th, Linda Porritt, Ted Morrison, Sharron Morrison and Lennis Trotter.

  • President Dave: March 15 is our St Patrick’s Day party right here at the Oshawa Golf Club. Thank you to Sue MacKinnon for organizing. Spouses Invited. The meal will be – Homemade Steak and Guinness Pie with Baily’s Cheesecake for dessert. The maximum number of guests total would be 30 people. The cost per person would be the same as it is every other week. Proof of vaccination will be required. Please contact Past President Sue MacKinnon with a YES or a No and How Many are coming.

  • President Dave: Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Reverse Draw Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on June 2nd. We have been granted the lottery  license application and certificate of insurance. Will be held at the Courtyard.Marriott Oshawa.

  • Past-President David Andrews: There are 225 Tickets to sell Reverse Draw Dinner and Silent Auction. President Dave has sold 6. Encouraging all to start selling early. The printed tickets will be available next week. David will be sending out a letter that we can share with friends, family and colleagues, as well as a poster.

For the Silent Auction Items - Take a picture of the item, write up as much information as you can, send the photo and description to David Andrews, then deliver the items to PDG Ted Morrison

  • President Dave: Our soil amendment (a.k.a. manure) material has been ordered. So everyone should start taking orders!

  • President Dave: District 7070 Softball Tournament. Thank you to John Kellam for volunteering to lead  this fun event. If you want to play, please let John know as soon as possible. The Rotary Club of G.O.A.L.S.(the newest club in our District)  is hosting an inaugural Rotary softball fundraiser tournament and needs your participation!   We're looking for teams and/or individuals to play in a fun, one-day Saturday tournament in Whitby this June (11th or the 18th)!    guaranteed four, up to six games; all (or no!) skill levels encouraged to play!; three-pitch (i.e. pitch to your own team); prizes, raffles, and all proceeds to benefit Rotary Club of G.O.A.L.S. charitable account! Winner of the draw was Robbie Larocque. He drew the 2 of Clubs.

 

HAPPY BUCKS

Bob Koski – His grandparents came from the Ukraine to Manitoba where Bob was born and in February, his family had their Ukranian Christmas Dinner .

Bob Stewart – Went to Subway for lunch recently and saw two kids in there too. He asked them if they were skipping school. He also told them he was at the very first class at Paul Dwyre High School. Bob said the principal was very strict and then Bob switched to MCVI.

Robert Kipling – His grandparents also came from the Ukraine and settled in Saskatchewan. He was looking through the family trunk to see some of the memorabilia when they came to Saskatchewan.

  • Editor’s note: In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine, Rotary created an official channel for contributions to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts You can also donate to the Rotary Foundation Canada to the Disaster Response fund. Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund in support of Ukraine can be made here. All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.

Pat Dyck has one grandson going to Quebec for navy training and another grandson going into the Canadian Army and of course , she is worried about them.

John Kellam had 3 granddaughters over to their home this weekend and his 13 yr old granddaughter wanted to and went to work at MAK Funeral Home with John on the weekend. He is very proud of her.
