We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

  • President Dave & Ted Morrison – From District Governor Ron Dick: Disaster Relief for Ukraine:  In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the Rotary Foundation has made available the Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions. All donations made online at Disaster Response Fund | My Rotary, including the use of available district designated funds (DDF), need to be received by April 30, 2022. Grant applications to take advantage of the funds will be available now through June 30, 2022. This will be the main avenue for Rotary Foundation support, but Rotary and Rotaract clubs are also encouraged to create their own responses to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. In addition to the support provided through the Disaster Response Fund, the Foundation is coordinating with partners and regional leaders, exploring effective solutions to the increased humanitarian needs. A separate email sent out to all Rotarians from Bob Wallace (also on the front page of the District 7070 website) has more details on how to help! Thank you for all that you do to promote peace.

  • President Dave – From District Governor Ron Dick: After a two year absence, the St. Patrick’s Parade is scheduled to return to Toronto on Sunday, March 20 at 12 noon.  And The Rotary Club of Toronto has been entered as a community entry to march in the parade!  Bring out your green and join fellow Rotarians, friends and family in being part of the parade.   The parade begins on Bloor near St. George to Yonge, down Yonge to Queen and ends at Nathan Phillips Square.  Please email Kevin Power (kpower@couttscrane.com) if you are interested in attending.

  • President Dave & Larry Hurren:  Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium: Search out a Youth in Your Community and invite them. Rotary District 7070 is excited to announce the 2022 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium, May 26-29, 2022 taking place at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest Centre, an environmentally sensitive, overnight outdoor education facility located in the heart of the majestic Ganaraska Forest just north of Port Hope! The 3 night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Indigenous Culture, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Toastmasters/Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with camp fires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!!  All this for only $299 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals.  Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host.  There are only 30 spots available so act fast!  March 20 is the registration Deadline.   • President Dave: March 15 is our St Patrick’s Day party right here at the Oshawa Golf Club. Thank you to Sue MacKinnon for organizing. Spouses Invited. The meal will be – Homemade Steak and Guinness Pie with Baily’s Cheesecake for dessert. The maximum number of guests total would be 30 people. The cost per person would be the same as it is every other week. Proof of vaccination will be required. Please contact Past President Sue MacKinnon with a YES or a No and How Many are coming.

  • President Dave:  On March 22 our keynote speaker is Yves Gadler, CEO of the Lakeridge Health Foundation.

  • President Dave & Dave Andrews : Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Reverse Draw, Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on June 2nd. We have been granted the lottery license application and certificate of insurance. Will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Oshawa. There are 225 Tickets to sell Reverse Draw Dinner and Silent Auction. President Dave has sold 6. Encouraging all to start selling early. The printed tickets NOW be available and many distributed tonight. Thank you.  Dave has sent out a letter that we can share with friends, family and colleagues, as well as a poster. For the Silent Auction Items - Take a picture of the item, write up as much information as you can, (name of product, donor, retail value) and send the photo and description to David Andrews, then deliver the items to PDG Ted Morrison

  • President Dave: District 7070 Softball Tournament. Thank you to John Kellam for volunteering to lead  this fun event. If you want to play, please let John know as soon as possible. The Rotary Club of G.O.A.L.S.(the newest club in our District)  is hosting an inaugural Rotary softball fundraiser tournament and needs your participation!   We're looking for teams and/or individuals to play in a fun, one-day Saturday tournament in Whitby this June (11th or the 18th)!    guaranteed four, up to six games; all (or no!) skill levels encouraged to play!; three-pitch (i.e. pitch to your own team); prizes, raffles, and all proceeds to benefit Rotary Club of G.O.A.L.S. charitable account! We have to get back to Rotary Club of G.O.A.L.S. Secretary Mark Blackmore at mark_blackmore@hotmail.com or call/text at 905 626 8742 by March 15 to make inquiries or express our interest!

  • President Dave: At the March 1 Club Board of Directors Meeting, it was passed that we set aside $2,500 for assistance to refugees when they arrive here in Oshawa.

  • President Dave: TODAY, March 8th is International Women’s Day. Thank you to all our wonderful women for their achievements and leadership everywhere. A big shout out to our first incoming Rotary International Madam President, Jennifer Jones (Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland).

  • REMINDER: President Dave: Our soil amendment (a.k.a. manure) material has been ordered. So everyone should start taking orders!

Winner of the draw was Larry Hurren . He drew the 7 of Hearts. One less card in the deck and the pot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS

Sue MacKinnon – Her son and grandson are coming for a visit from British Columbia

Ted Morrison – and Sharron had a wonderful time in Niagara Falls on a mini vacation. The food prices , however, were out of sight. And he almost broke even.

Bob Koski – Fibre Optics being installed in the neighbourhood and a new box in his front yard. His Rogers cable got cut during the installation. He called Rogers, got very quick service and he was back on line in less than 2 hours. PLUS, his granddaughter, now in grade 9 had excellent marks on her interim report card. Bob think she must take after patty.

Bob Stewart -  A sad buck – Rhonda told him his happy buck last week was stupid.

Dave Penney – Happy to see and welcomed Brady Bodley as our guest tonight. Brady is a former Rotaractor , now in law practice here in Oshawa and would like to get back into Rotary service. See you next week Brady.

Tim Dwyre – His daughter and son in law came for the weekend. He can now do 3 more functions on his cell phone. They also installed a light for Tim at the top of the stairs. And his daughter did some house cleaning , since the cleaning lady was coming to Tim’s the next day.
