GUEST SPEAKER:  Bob Wallace -  The Rotary Foundation

David Penny introduced Bob Wallace . Bob is Bob Wallace President of the Rotary Club of Port Hope, and Past District Governor, current Rotary Zone 24 East Coordinator, and incoming Chair of the District 7070 Rotary Foundation Committee Foundation Chair for District 7070.

Bob congratulated Parkwood Rotary on having 19 Paul Harris Fellows ( whose cumulative donations to The Rotary Foundation are $1,000 US or more) and 10 Rotary Foundation benefactors  (who have bequeathed $1,000 US or more in their will.

He noted that since our club began, back in 1976, our members and our club have donated over $5000,000 to The Rotary Foundation and this year, we have surpassed our goal for donations to the Annual Programs Fund and to the Polio Fund.

He noted that even during the pandemic, Rotary needs funding from Rotarians to carry out our goal of Polio eradication, and urged us to make a donation to the PolioPlus Fund if we are able.

Bob also thanked Devon and Linda for their generous donation as members of the Arch Klumpf Society.

Bob suggested that since interest is down on our stocks, it is a good time to get a tax deduction and give to The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation has given over $4.7 million US (so far) in the form of grants to District from worldwide Foundation Disaster Fund for COVID -19 relief.

He noted that the Rotary responds COVID-19 Telethon, on May 2, 2020  raised over $525,000 US towards COVID-19 efforts.

Bob noted that our District has not yet applied for a Rotary Foundation $25,000 COVID-19 grant. The committee wil be doing so shortly and asked for suggestions from District clubs and members.

He thanked everyone in our club for donating, this year to The Rotary Foundation and help us all honour our Past District Governor Bill Patchett and try to donate , from our District members, $1 million to The Rotary Foundation this rotary year (40 days to go). Today it stands at $895,000.63 US.

Ted Morrison thanked Bob for his hard work and interesting and informative talk.

Ted Morrison, then made his presentation to the club , honouring our club members who have reached their next plateau in donations to The Rotary Foundation.

Congratulations to all of our members who have already reached Paul Harris Recognition plateaus:

Tonight, we celebrate and CONGRATULATE our Rotary Club members who have reached their “next” Rotary Foundation recognition plateau during this Rotary year :

Robbie Larocque   PHF +3

David Penney    PHF +3

 Larry Hurren    PHF +5

Kris Sachdeva   PHF+5

That is not all. Rotary Clubs can also recognize non-Rotarians from our community, who has performed outstanding service to our community, and has exemplified the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” over many years, by making a $1,000 donation to The Rotary Foundation, in their name and bestowing upon them a Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Tonight, the Rotary Club recognizes a person who has kept in touch with fellow members and especially spouses of members for many years, has done hours of service at the Kids Safety Village, and who opens her home to our Club for many years at Christmas for our annual Christmas party and that, of course, is Esther Trotter.

CONGRATULATIONS ESTHER !!!

Ted suggested that members could donate to the Rotary Foundation from their savings from the weekly dinners. The money to support The Rotary Foundation comes from our members.

Since COVID-19 hit, we have missed about 2 months of spending money on our weekly meetings. At about $100 per month, wouldn’t it be a nice gesture if our members made a donation of $200 per member, to The Rotary Foundation.

REMINDER: Devon would like to get the donations in by the end of may so that he can tabulate the results of each donation, assign the correct amount to the Paul Harris recognition, and send one cheque to The Rotary Foundation. Thank you all.

Thank you to Linda Biddle for sharing with us our Rotary Club of Oshawa-parkwood Zoom Meeting:

President Lennis closed meeting at 7.39 pm but many stayed on and just had a nice chat with eachother.
