ANNOUNCEMENTS

Past District Governor Ted Morrison thanked everyone who came out last Saturday for our meal packing for Kids Against Hunger at the Jubilee Pavilion at Lakeview Park and thank you to our Rotary partners.  It was a real joint effort. Thank you to the 2 Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and our two Rotary Clubs in Whitby. Thank you to Rotarian and Regional Chair John Henry, MPP Jennifer French, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter, Deputy Mayor Bob Chapman, Whitby Councilors JoAnne Alexander and Dierdre Newman and thank you to our Rotary Club member Dr Colin Carrie, our MP for Oshawa who all came out and helped. Rotarians and their families really are People of Action.

Reverse Draw Co-Chair Robbie Larocque – reminded the Committee to stay for a few minutes to review any last minute details for Thursday May 9.

RYLA GALA AWARDS DINNER : President Linda reminded everyone in our club to attend the MAY  8RYLA Gala Dinner and Awards - Come meet the future leaders of today as well as other Rotarians from the district on May 8, 2019 at The YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre (13300 Concession Rd 11, Schomberg, ON L0G 1T0). We are all invited. The evening starts at 6:00 PM with a meet and greet of all the RYLA participants and their sponsors. Dinner is at 7:00 pm followed by a graduation ceremony. Let’s sell tickets to the event and Let’s secure lots of Silent Auction items (be sure to send a photo, retail value, donor name address, etc to Dave Andrews so he can create a poster for the evening and also for Facebook and our website. Your donors will appreciate the promo). Be sure to get your items to Ted as soon as you can.  150 Tickets out so far for Reverse Draw. We have 60 items, so far, going for a goal of 100. DISTRICT ASSEMBLY: District Assembly, May 11, 2019 at BMO Institute For Learning (IFL), 3550 Pharmacy Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario M1W 3Z3   8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Incoming President Lennis Trotter has asked all of the incoming Board Members and Committee chairs for next Rotary year to attend and sign up on the District 7070 website. Open to all Rotary Club members. Our Rotary Club will pay for your registration cost.

Incoming President Lennis announce that the next meeting of the Kids Safety Village Board and Committee would be August 12 at the Kids Safety Village. Time to be announced.

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP DAY IN OSHAWA: (tentative date: September 28, 2019 )– Once again, this year, our two Rotary Clubs in Oshawa will have our joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood. Noon to  1:30 pm at Parkwood, the estate of the late Colonel R. S. McLaughlin as both clubs host and bring back to life, District 7070  Rotary Friendship Day in Oshawa. Everyone in District 7070 is invited. Cost to be determined. You may bring guests as well.  A portion of your ticket price will go to The Rotary Foundation and will be credited to you next Paul Harris Fellow. Registration will open in the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for both of our Rotary clubs to work together again. You can register soon for you and your guest to attend Rotary Friendship Day in Oshawa at Parkwood Estate.

ROTARY FASHION SHOW: REMINDER - Janice Coupland - The revised date for the fashion show is now Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019.

ROTARY ZONE 24 7 32 CONFERENCE:  President Linda encouraged everyone to register for the 2019 Rotary Zone 24 & 32 Zone Conference - Zone Conference - September 19-21, 2019 in Niagara Falls. This is a great opportunity to meet more members of the Rotary family in a location close to home. The conference theme is “People Coming Together.” Be sure to Register TODAY.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP DAY WITH THE TORNTO ARGONAUTS: President Linda reminded us about The Rotary Clubs of Toronto and Toronto West exploring a renewed partnership with the Toronto Argonauts with a special focus on our common interest in Youth Services. The current proposal is for a Rotary Youth Leadership Day on the afternoon of Saturday, September 28, followed by the game at 7:00 p.m. There will be an opportunity to sponsor young people to attend the leadership session and also the opportunity to attend the game for a price that includes a donation to End Polio Now. Stay tuned.

WORLD POLIO DAY IN DURHAM REGION: October 24 – DETAILS TO FOLLOW  - Tentative details - 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm -  joint  meeting of Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood hosting our 10 Durham Region Rotary Clubs in the new Global Classroom in the new Centre for  Collaborative  Education at Durham College where we will celebrate World Polio Day with leaders from around the world.  ALL ROTARIANS AND GUESTS IN DISTRICT 7070 ARE INVITED TO THE GLOBAL CLASSROOM . Cash bar and  hors d'oeuvres will be served. Cost to be determined for 2019 (last year we had it pegged at $25 per person , with a portion to be donated to The Rotary Foundation's Polio Eradictaion Initative and will credited to your next Paul  Harris Fellow.) Spouses, guests and prospective members are invited. We will see the live Rotary International livestream event and then,  we will livestream our event live to Rotary Clubs, Universities and colleges worldwide.  Proclamations from our cities and Durham region will be presented to all 10 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region. Dr. Bob Scott , our keynote speaker has already confirmed other speakers from around the world .

.DISTRICT CONFERENCE – OCTOBER 25 – 27: REMINDER – Vice President Lennis Trotter – encouraged everyone to register TODAY, for the District 7070 Conference on Oct 25-27 held in Muskoka on Lake Rosseau. KIDS SAFETY VILLAGE HALLOWEEN HAUNT: OCTOBER 25 AND 26: SAVE THESE DATES: The next big VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES that we will have at the Kids Safety Village will be The Halloween Haunt on Oct 25 and 26 (and some preparation to spruce up the Village for Halloween, before these dates),

KIDS SAFETY VILLAGE : CHRISTMAS AT THE VILLAGE: and the Christmas at The Village on Nov 21,22 and 23 and also on Nov 28, 29 and 30 (plus some sprucing up The Village for Christmas before these dates).

THE ACE OF SPADES DRAW:   Winner:  Dan Pantaleo, who  drew the 10 of Clubs and received tubes of travel sized toothpaste courtesy of Dr Larry Hurren . The pot grows and the deck gets smaller.

HAPPY TOONIES

Larry helped organize Heart Care,( cardiac prevention, research and rehab) who hosted a free education forum at Faith United Church in Courtice on May 4. Local experts discussed various cardiac care topics and handed out awards to the most outstanding cardiac nurses and paramedics in Durham Region, with Dr Bhargava and then Larry had enough energy to help at Bingo, Saturday night.

David Penney – had a fantastic trip to Ecuador and Peru and to Galapagos Island. Lots of hiking on their trip at high altitudes.

Colleen McLaren – very happy to be getting a new pool deck and liner which has needed it for 12 years. Way to go Mike.

Mike McLaren – lots of reasons-  $$$ - for waiting a few years to get the pool refurbished.

Terry Giles -  thanked everyone for coming to his 90th birthday party at the Armories on May 3. So nice to see so many Rotarians past and present.

Robbie Larocque – happy that this hockey season has finally come to an end for the Larocque family  and next year starts again in June.

Ted Morrison – at 4:30today, they noticed a leak under the floors at home. And the journey to fix the leak and do all of the repairs has begun.

Hilda Finnigan really had a great time at Kids Against Hunger as did A and  Al’s brother Mike, who was visiting

David Andrews – very happy for the successful Kids Against Hunger project and also for a very Happy Birthday at Terry’s party last Friday evening.
