AGAIN, for these many weeks, THANK YOU TO: our very own Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian Eric Guernsey for arranging ( and coming to our rescue this week, at the last minute to get us started) the Zoom Meeting sharing with tonight’s guest speaker, Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority, The Durham Workforce Authority is the acknowledged provider of local workforce information and champion of workforce development initiatives unique to Durham Region. Heather just happens to be tonight’s guest speaker. Their Mission is to produce and offer comprehensive Labour Market Information to our stakeholders, to facilitate workforce solutions by engaging community partners and employers and to encourage development and maintenance of a sustainable and dynamic workforce. It was so nice to be able to have a whole hour for our Zoom meeting. We thank you both and we thank you both for the continued use of your Zoom meeting network.

Community Bottle and Food Drive, September 26, 2020: President Sue thanked everyone for helping from both Rotary Clubs in Oshawa as we joined with clubs from all over the District and held our Rotary Community Bottle and Food Drive on Saturday September 26, at the Oshawa Centre and Durham College / Ontario Tech University North Campus. Please check out the District 7070 Facebook Page for our Bottle and Food Drive and the others too. And a special thank you to the Oshawa Express (thank you Sandy and Kim) for their article in last Wednesday’s edition. Although we did not raise a lot of money, we did take in 241lbs of food which equals 200 meals. Thank you everyone.
The Hallowe’en Haunt at The Kids Safety Village of Durham Region has been cancelled due to COVID-19. The safety of the kids is our utmost importance. The Board of Directors of the Kids Safety Village is now looking hard at whether or not we do Christmas at The Village in late November / early December. Stay tuned. Note: The Whitby and Oshawa Santa Claus Parades have already been cancelled.
OUR REGULAR WEEKLY MEETINGS WILLL NOT BE AT THE OSHAWA GOLF CLUB UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. We will let you know when that may happen. As it stands right now, the Oshawa Golf Club is not hosting any outside organizations (such as ourselves) at the present time.
President Sue announced that September 30 is Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Indigenous Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on. www.orangeshirtday.org

OCTOBER 7 – Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Board of Directors ZOOM Meeting - time to be announced
The 2020 Foundation Walk to raise money for the Rotary Foundation – Will NOT take place on October 18 at the Toronto Beaches boardwalk! due to the new 25 limit on outside gathering numbers imposed for COVID-19. District 7070 was planning a smaller in-person and COVID responsible walk with 100 Rotarians to comply with existing Toronto By-laws. Attendees were to be mainly Rotary and Rotaract Club Presidents and District Leaders. BUT our next step is raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. This is a very important part of a walk, a virtual walk or a club walk, as District 7070 Rotary Clubs annually raise over $100K from this event for the good work of the Foundation. The District 7070 is also encouraging clubs to hold their own walks within their communities! President Sue has suggested our own walk on October 25, 1PM at Cullen Park. It is flat, has wide pavement that will allow for social distancing . All we have to do now is get pledges and raise funds and go on our own Walk for the Rotary Foundation. Let’s start raising our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood funds for the Rotary Foundation Walk. It will be here in no time.
DUES ARE DUE: You have all received an invoice from our Treasurer, Bill Creamer, for the 2020-21 Rotary Dues. There are still members who have not paid. The Annual Dues will be $230.00. At the same time, you will have the option to make a donation to The Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund of $100 and a donation to The Rotary Foundation PolioPlus Funds for $20 (or more if you wish). You will be credited towards your next Paul Harris Fellow Award. Please pay your dues promptly when you get your invoice, by mailing or dropping off your cheque (or cash), payable to the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, to 96 King Street East, Oshawa L1H 1B6. Thank you everyone. We have already paid our semi annual invoice from Rotary International. You can send him a cheque or you can pay Bill bye-transfer. Meals On Wheels – Volunteers Are Still Required - We need help, members. Bill and Sue have been the only ones helping so far. Please contact Bill or Sue if you can help. This is a commitment we have as a Rotary Club to ensure the success of this very important community service. Monday is our day to volunteer.
BULLETIN EDITORS REQUIRED: Volunteers Are Still Required NOW – We need help, members. Past President Hilda Finnigan is asking everyone in the club to volunteer for a month and write the Club Bulletin. August was looked after. Thank you, Janice Coupland and Kris Sachdeva for August. Thank you Ted Morrison for doing September. Since NO ONE else has volunteered, Janice has volunteered again to do the bueeltin in October. (Editor’s note: It is time for more club members to step up and do your duty – volunteer) . We need editors for November 2020 through June 2021. And it is not too late to assist Jan and take over October. Please let Hilda Finnigan know as soon as you can.

New Members Gathering – 1 hour on a weekday evening – currently all slated on Zoom – what an excellent opportunity for any member, new or old, to learn more about Rotary. Everyone is welcome.

Grow Rotary Sessions – Approximately 90 minutes on a Saturday morning - currently all slated on Zoom – interact with Rotarians from all over the District. Get ideas and offer ideas how we can grow our club membership. A Zoom link will be sent on Friday Oct 2nd to everyone who has registered by 9 p.m. on Oct 1. Are you interested in your club’s path to Grow Rotary ? Having a strong vibrant Rotary Club involves Membership - looking after our members - new, seasoned and potential, Public Image – reaching out to our communities showing them what we do and showing the power of what we can do – our Foundation. Hear from some D7070 Clubs that are successfully Growing Rotary in the current situation. We encourage at least 3 members from a club to attend so you can share the discussion and work on plans integrating Membership, Public Image and Foundation in your growth strategy.

Tuesday Talks - “Developing Leaders in District 7070” - with The District 7070 Leadership Development Committee - REGISTER TODAY.Our next Tuesday Talk is coming up on October 13 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm.
Dhamay Kanthan, Chair, and her entire District 7070 Leadership Development Committee invite you to "Tuesday Talks" on October 13 from 7 PM to 8 PM, entitled, “Developing Leaders”. Come ready to learn and connect as this team charts its course to create an effective leadership framework in our district that includes engaging a younger generation in Rotary service. Developing good leaders is key to turning Rotary's vision of ‘a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change’ into reality. Leadership is about bringing clarity to where we are headed and then creating an environment where people have the freedom to be their best and can use their gifts to get there. It is always, always all about the people, not just the plan.
District 7070 Rotary Foundation Committee Members Wanted!!! – Bob Wallace is still looking for new members for the District Foundation Committee to help spend our Rotary District 7070’s money (grant money that is). See the District website www.rotary7070.org (centre column) for more details. Isn’t it time that you volunteered beyond your own Rotary Club? Just as Past District Governor Ted, Public Image Chair Dave A or Diversity Equity & Inclusion Chair Heather just how rewarding it is to help 55 Rotary Clubs right here in our area.
Interested in becoming an Assistant Governor? ...or know someone who may be interested in this role? We are in the process of seeking several enthusiastic, qualified Rotarians to take on the important role of AG next year. Check out the attached document outlining the AG mandate and qualifications required - application deadline is October 1/20 and can be emailed to me. Rotary offers "endless opportunities" and this may be one of them for you!
BINGO AT THE RED BARN RETURNS: NEXT ONE : OCTOBER 24
Our second day back was Sept 26 at 12:30 PM. Need to be there by 11 AM. We have 3 people for this session. Thank you Al and Hilda Finnigan and David Mankiewicz.
Note: Only 3 volunteers at the Bingos at the present time: ONE Banker. ONE front desk Sales Person and ONE U Pick Em Sales Person.
Volunteers Are Still Required NOW - We need help, members. Please let Sandy know if YOU are available for future Bingos. We need to be there by 11 AM. Things are different under COVID-19. With only 2 bingo sessions a day, we may only get one bingo per month. Stay tuned. Sandy is looking for 3 ONLY volunteers for October 24. Please let Sandy know if you can volunteer, as soon as you can.
Here is a note from the Red Barn:
As part of stage 3, upon opening, we will only be permitted 50 customers per session. This restriction, although keeps everyone safer, makes it very difficult to operate our regular bingo schedule. Please be patient with us in this introductory phase as we anticipate opening with 2 events per day (12:30 pm and 6:45 pm) with new programs that must be geared towards smaller crowds due to the temporary capacity restrictions. We have applied for a special request to increase the number of patrons permitted in the hall and we shall give you an update as soon as we have one. Please know that we are working very hard towards opening and offering a product that is acceptable to you until things get back to normal.
PLEASE NOTE: Doors will be opened at 11:30 am for our 12:30 pm session and 5:45 pm for the 6:45 pm session.
The Snack Bar will be closed until further notice but we have installed Vending Machines with Cold and Hot Beverages and Snacks for your convenience.
The health and wellness of our customers, charities, and staff are paramount. Upon arrival, customers will be greeted by an attendant at the front entrance to ensure social distancing is adhered to. Please note that if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath; or if you have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days; or if someone you are in close contact with tested positive for Covid 19; or if you have been told to self-isolate by a medical professional or Public Health, we apologize but you will not be permitted to enter the premises.
Other Precautions in effect:
Promoting Social Distancing by managing traffic flow throughout our hall.
Customers, Staff and Charity Volunteers are asked to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet whenever possible.
Customers will be seated 6 feet from each other.
Sneeze Guards are placed at all selling stations.
Sanitizing Stations have been implemented throughout the hall. Please use the provided hand sanitizer when entering the building and we encourage you to clean hands frequently with soap and warm water or hand sanitizer.
Regular cleaning/disinfecting of all surface areas. Table tops and chair frames will be thoroughly cleaned/disinfected in between bingo sessions.
All staff and charity volunteers are required to wear masks or face coverings.
Customers are required wear masks or face coverings at all times while in the hall. If you do not have your own mask one will be provided for you.
Restroom have enhanced automatic capabilities.

WORLD POLIO DAY 2020 IN DURHAM REGION: OCT 22 FROM 7 TO 8:30 PM VIA LIVESTREAM:
A joint meeting of the 10 Durham Region Rotary Clubs live from the new Global Classroom in the new Centre for Collaborative Education at Durham College where we will celebrate World Polio Day with leaders from around the world. This year, it is online.
Spouses, guests and prospective members, your friends and all clubs in District 7070 and all over the world will be watching. Proclamations presentations and flag raisings from the 8 City and Region Mayors to our 10 clubs in Durham Region will also be shown by video. Dr. Bob Scott, immediate past chair of Rotary’s PolioPlus Committee (worldwide) will be our keynote speaker, updating everyone on Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio from this world. He will be talking LIVE with Ian Riseley, Past President Rotary International, from Australia, and he may connect with PolioPlus Volunteers from around the world. We will also see the Rotary International 2020 World Polio Day broadcast and we will livestream that too to everyone in the world. All clubs in the District are invited to watch the event. President Sue is still looking at having a VIRTUAL OCTOBERFEST near the end of October. This would include a meal that could be picked up or delivered. Sue has established a committee to look into it. Volunteers to help were Jan, Tim, Ana, Sue, Dave A and Linda.
