GUEST SPEAKER

Name of Speaker:  Donna Doherty – Senior Development Officer , Trent University Durham

Introduced by Past District Governor Ted Morrison, Donna Doherty is a senior development officer at Trent University with a particular focus on raising awareness of and financial support for the Trent University Durham GTA campus located at 55 Thornton Road.  Trent Durham has been in the community for 45 years and is now undergoing an expansion. Donna is here to share with us an update on the campus, as well as the expansion project.  On a personal note, Donna grew up in  New Orleans and has lived in Port Perry for the last 25 years and she is a member of the Rotary Club of Oshawa.

Donna gave us a brief history of Trent University in Oshawa and the plans for the future.

Trent started in Oshawa 45 years ago offering night school courses at Eastdale Collegiate. By 1977, they were headquartered at Durham College and in 2009 moved to the campus on Thornton Rd, just north of the old Civic Auditorium, which they purchased with their own funds for $1.2 million. There has been a steady increase in enrollment (869 students in 2015 and 1,398 students in 2018).

Classes run from 8 am to 9 pm. 70% of the students come from the Durham region with 20% coming from Oshawa. 90% of the over 2,000 graduates are employed within 6 months of graduating. Incoming students are not out of high school, the majority come from Durham College, Ont Tech U, or from the working  community.

Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree programs offering is enormous: Anthropology, Arts, Business Admin, Child and  Youth Studies, Communications, Computing, English Lit, Gender & Women Studies, History, Journalism, Law, Media  Studies, Online Programming, Philosophy, Policing, Psychology, Science, Social Work, Sociology, Teacher education, Library, and more.

Trent partners closely with On Tech U and Durham College to complement each other, not duplicate.

Economic impact on Oshawa is $47.3 million.

On Sept 1 Joe Muldoon is retiring and Dr Scott Henderson will become the new Dean and Head of Trent U Durham.

Fast forward to today, Trent U Durham has embarked on a $5 million campaign. Co Chairs are Doug Kirk (owner of the  Oshawa Radio Stations) and Steve Apostolopoulos (managing partner in Triple Group of Companies, whose projects include the creation of Durham Live in Pickering). The campaign will support the campus expansion project, increase financial aid for students, and provide students with  hands-on experiences and career ready skills.

In 2020, a new building will be created on the Thornton Rd campus. Opening fall 2020, a new $4 million residence and academic building will enhance the outstanding student experience that Trent is known for, providing new spaces and enhanced opportunities for the whole community to socialize, learn, study, and engage in life on campus. Land was donated by the City of Oshawa, and Durham Region gave $1,42 million. Ground breaking took place in May 2019. The  rest of the campaign has a goal of $500,000 for scholarships and bursaries specifically for the Durham Campus students.

The third goal of another $500,000 is for the career enhancements required by students for additional training and equipment.

Note: over 90% of students are on OSAP loans.

Donna was thanked by our Director Janice Coupland.
