Derrick grew up in Oshawa, and worked his way up through the entire fire department, doing continuing education throughout his career, and became Chief in March 2017. He reports directly to the Commissioner of Community Services and is accountable for the administration of the Fire Service . He is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a $25 million budget. Under the Fire Prevention & Protection Act, he also reports to City Council. Oshawa has 164 full time firefighters, 16 communication operators, 10 fire prevention officers, 3 training officers and 8 admin staff.

Oshawa Fire Services provides the highest level of life safety and property protection to our community. We are proud of the men and women who work for Oshawa Fire Services and the skills and services they provide on a daily basis. We respond to many types of emergencies, including:
fires
medical assists
motor vehicle accidents
specialized type rescues
Other services provided to the public include:
fire safety inspections, fire prevention and public fire safety education
emergency planning and preparedness
enforcement of the Ontario Fire Code, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, municipal by-laws, and fire control activities
plans review and new building construction inspections
Derrick mentioned he was happy to be on our Zoom meeting and said he is proud of the good work that Rotary does on an ongoing basis. His department, just like ours, supports organizations like our local College and University, Simcoe Hall Settlement House, Kids Safety Village and many more.
He prides himself on the great work that his teams do every day. The COVID had an impact on his organization having to recreate policies and protocol. We have done this is a very safe way and have incorporated very effective plans that are in place.
The leading causes of fires are careless smoking, cooking/electrical heating and appliances. The primary problem is Smoke Alarms that are not working or batteries are dead and not changed on a regular basis. With regards to smoking, believe it or not, putting a cigarette out in a flower pot and cause his problems. Hall #7 Station is slated for the 407 corridor and they can add new trucks at anytime to the current fire halls where needed.
Derrick said that his department is trusted and they value what they do. They use digital platforms to get safe messages and reminders out whenever they can. We are together when we are apart. They are constantly coming up with contingency plans working on business continuity.
The Fire Department is recruiting and will replace a New Assistant Deputy Chief. Possible procurement development plan 2021 platform. Trucks are essential there is an acquisition of the Truck to be done shortly and a new Pumper is coming.
The Ontario Fire Marshall assists us on an ongoing basis – great relationship.
