SPEAKER: Past President David Andrews introduced our Guest Speaker Dr. Robert Kyle.
Dr. Kyle is the Commissioner and Medical Officer of Health for the Regional Municipality of Durham, has held this position since 1991. Dr. Kyle holds a long list of credentials including Family, Community and Public Health Medicine. He participates in Public Health Agencies and Committees, sits on several Boards. This vast experience gives him the ability and stamina to take a leadership role in dealing with the COVID pandemic over the past two years.
Dr. Kyle touched on several issues and important points with regard to the pandemic and where we are “at right now” as well as moving forward. He stated that he and others have been working seven days a week for two years often facing anger and taking abuse from the public and those they are trying to help and support. He made several points including
The effect of changing variants on detectability
Natural immunity vs vaccination immunity – the combination of the two
Review of Municipality Stats, noting there is a decrease in the number of outbreaks
The difficulty in tracking the source of exposure
He noted that most recently they have begun “waste water surveillance” in the water treatment plants in the Region. This will provide information useful in tracking exposure and outbreaks.
There were several questions from members.
Hilda Finnigan thanked Dr. Kyle for his informative talk as well his and his colleagues work over the past two years, and hoping they would get some well deserved recovery time in the near future.

District Governor Ron Dick is still looking for participants for the 2022 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium, May 26-29, 2022 taking place at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest Centre, Open to young people ages 17 - 33. This Symposium replaces the previous programme RYLA. The registration fee is $299. Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Reverse Draw Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on June 2nd. We have been granted the lottery license application and tickets will be available to sell shortly. We are starting to promote this on Social Media – Please start promoting our big event with your friends and others who are prospective ticket buyers and silent auction donators.
